PGH Group HPT purchase???

With all the tuning knowledge RL Dan's been able to share with everyone and now that many more people are wanting to get tuned, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in going in and getting HPT to share and learn together? And while Dan is at school, we could email and compare tunes with him and each other without him having to come home for the weekend to tune. (nothing against you RL Dan you're the best tuner we've got, but after seeing you trying to tune 4 cars last night, I thought it would be a good idea to get another cable and more tuners out there now that the LSJs are getting more and more popular. I'm willing to learn and tune too - I'm pretty interested in this stuff now)

I believe you can also make changes to a tune on a computer and save them for when you have the cable and can upload them. Obviously tuning can be risky, but there are people that will look over your tune to see if you're doing anything crazy/insane/dangerous.

The cable is the important piece that holds all the credit and VIN info, so we could install on a couple computers and whoever has the cable would be able to tune. Considering how much everyone hangs out, one person could grab it for like 3 or 4 days at a time and pass it onto the next person. Plus we could tune during meets and track nights too. Knowing everyone here, if there is a problem, we'd all pitch in to fix it.

Saw something similar on the RL forums and thought I'd throw the option out there. Here's a couple numbers I came up with:

HPT = $650 + $10 shipping for software, cable, and 8 credits (2 credits per car, 6 credits per model year)

Additional people over 4 = $100 for credits each, unless we can license a whole model year, then we could possibly license many cars for the 8 credits included with the purchase.

4 users - $660 / 4 = $165.00 ea
5 users - $660 + $100 for credits / 5 = $152.00 ea
6 users - $660 + $200 for credits / 6 = $143.50 ea

The more users, the cheaper it would get. Depending on how many people/year and make of their car, we might be able to shave some $$$ by licensing a whole model year too. Example - if we find 5 '06 Cobalts and 1 '04 Redline, we could license all 6 cars without buying more credits.

I'm just gauging interest now. If you're interested and serious about it, throw your name on the list below with your year/model and we can discuss as a group later.

1. nduchene '04 Redline

4.

I don't know, I'm really not too much into tuning my car right now. And I'm not doing ANYTHING to the computer until 5 years or 60,000 miles, which works out cause that's probably about how long it's going to take me to build up my suspension where i want it.

I'd be interested in getting hptuners in a group buy. Well worth the money.

Just so you know, you can purchase Model/Year packages from HPTuners.

I'm actually saving room in my turbo budget for HPT. I want to be able to log my car and make small adjustments as I get more comfortable with tuning. Hence why I'm currently reading "How to Tune and Modify Engine Management Systems" and have another book ready to go after I finish this one. I want to learn enough to make small changes to my tune once I go turbo. If I get HPT as one of my first expenses, I'd be more than happy to let anyone in our group tune off of it.

Dano... where'd you get that book?? I'd like to get one of those if for nothing else...as a good reference material, and also so I could learn more about how all this works.

I wouldn't be interested in that ( the HPT ) just yet. I have alot of other stuff to worry about, and kinda same thought as Alicia with warranty for now ( Although... 60K will be here in about 8 months! ) and also want to get the handling part sorted 1st since I'm more on the Auto-X side of things rather than Drags.

Yeah Dan, with a custom setup, I'd splurge for HPT myself too (although if we get this group purchase going and you get your HPT, we could have 3 HPTs in the area and no one would ever go untuned )

Yeah, its a great piece of reading material from what I hear, especially for $20 online at amazon.com. I just dont understand why they couldn't put a better car on the front cover (It's a damn Ford Focus!!!)

bump bump...

It's hard to believe, out of everyone here, that Luigi and I are the only 2. I mean, you could go buy it for $700 or share it with 3 other people for $165 each...

Anyone else interested?

I have that same book, picked it up at B&N in Robinson for about 30 bucks a while back. Great piece of literature.
