2.2 piston go bye bye!!, VIDEO INSIDE
READ PAGE 3 POST #41 FOR UPDATE COMMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tonight, im buzzing at 2000 rpm's at 40 mph. i come to a stop, then i just tap the gas and get the revs up to 2000 again to just progress my way down lahser and maple road. i was on my way to my gf's art show before woodward, and then all of the sudden, kaboom! i hear a pop/backfire and then my car runs like s***. brent came to help me and make sure i didnt break down on the way to woodward. he followed me and noted i had black smoke (carbon) coming out of my exhaust, BADLY, and it smelled bad.
tim miller with the redline said it might be the cat clogged, so i took his challenge and we unbolted the dp real quick just to see if it would run good. no luck. so we kinda just laughed about it and its probably #2 that went bad considering it had the most misfires before. all i know is that this engines f***ed beyond belief. i went through 1/4 tank of gas just to get home.
now i know the dealers gotta see a problem, but im not sure if i should take it in to one of the 3 ive been to or not.
i'll get a video sometime saterday. today was my last day of school.....aparently thats when my cobalt decided to call it quits too
edit: symptoms include not exceeding 4500 rpms at all, check engine light on 100% of the time and blinks when i hit the gas. i get 10-12 mpg according to my guage as well.

DUDE BRING IT BACK TO THE DEALER THAT TOLD YOU LAST THAT IT WAS YOUR EXHAUST AND DRIVE IT UP HIS ASS... When i bought my first new car I was 18 and everywhere I went (as far as dealers) they were complete ****** and I would always have to have my father bring my car in otherwise they would say that it must have been from this or this, and it would always be bullshit!!! I would call GM Direct and bitch to them about those three dealers as well, and when your check engine light flashes, you are supposed to pull over and call GM right away, no driving after those flashes!
ARE U SERIOUS?!?! it just went that bad last night. for the past 5 months it wasnt that bad.
and screw the "dog the **** out of your car" crap right now. we ALL have seen 2.2's with 75 shots of n20, 90 shots of n20, turbocharged, and supercharged and NO PROBLEMS.
LMAO, ya the chevy dealer refused to do any checks on it because of some invoice about the 2.0 s/c ion redline and cobalt ss. (i know thats not my engine) so i asked. he said QUOTE "ITS A GENERIC INVOICE FOR ALL ECOTECS"
HOW DO U DO THAT?!?! supercharged 2.0 engine is = 2.2 NA engine
its crap i know, never buying a chevy again

hey i'm a tech at a chevy dealer and thats b.s. they know damn well that u have a an engine problem up top....its all about u being a younger guy and them not wanting to take the work on...and in your case u r completely stock because gm dealers can't void warranties if u have a gmpp part on your car. thats the whole point of gm selling performance parts so wont have to deal with this b.s. and also a flashing check engine light means there's big time damage being done to ur cat..should be able to smell it....i have an 07 2.2 and i wouldnt even drive it if i had that light....ur jus makin it worse...and if u really want to throw it in their faces...change ur exhaust back to stock if u can and bring it back. it sounds to me like u blew a compression ring on ur pistion and if not that u might have cylinder head problems..they both have just about the same symptoms and will def. throw that p0300 misfire code u got...
p.s. stop driving it somethings gotta give...and ur gonna end blowing something...
hey u lookin to get rid of that 2.2 by any chance?...

Dont even waste your time changing the exhaust back to stock.. if they say your warrenty is void becuase of a gm catback you bring this up.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuson-Moss_Warranty_Act ... then see what they have to say.. and i have had ppl try to tell me **** wasnt wrong when i know damn well it was and i just fight with them get there manager... youll get results lol
Dude that sucks big time. Kinda sounds like a twin motorcycle engine lol. Take that **** back to the dealer, seriously saying it's from your exhaust? They just don't want to give you a new engine. You have a warrenty and a right to use it.
ya no kidding dude. btw i remember seeing ur car at the ohio cobalt meet at the dealership. i didnt have my silver cobalt u see in the video at the meet simply because at that time it was actually IN THE DEALERSHIP when i took it in to get looked at.
i convoyed down with some other members on here like 06Black, tmrredline, ontariobalt, ngalaxytimmyo, etc. so they know exactly what im talking about. and are aware of my engine issues in full

update 5-13-08
ive dropped my car off to the dealer. the guy insisted on pulling the 2.0 LSJ misfire thing again. my dad basically had to beat it out of his head that he's wrong. and since my car has 36101 miles on it, GM wont pay for the rental car until they know what the problem is after diagnoisis of the engine. so right now im carless and the dealers got it now. my dad told me that when he finds out whats wrong, hes demanding a new engine, and if they dont go for it and want to rebuild it, that it better be the entire head assembly and nothing less.
update 5-14-08:
well my dad talked to the customer service lady and she called the dealer and asked what was up with my car. my dad had called the dealer several times and he had recieved no answer from their phones, and he had been calling since the day before. so who of the any, she calls my dad back and she describes to him that they have been diagnosing it for a while, and when they had inspected the internals, they noticed that a lot of the valves are screwed up. and that its really bad. so right now they are debateing whether to a) rebuild the head assembly or b) give me a new longblock engine entirely.
so we inquired about a rental car, and the dealer still hasnt offered up one or contacted us on that. even though they already have diagnosed the problem. so i think the dealer's just trying to get back at my dad and me for having them look at this car, or that they are just trying to be ******. either way, its just reinforceing my stance on how bad of service these dealers have.
my dad also talked to Jeff, some engineer for the ecotec, and he said that the L61 engine is notorious for this problem with the valves seating properly. he said that he owns an 06 cobalt as well and that he sees it happen in these engines all the time down where he works. my dad asked why this was, is it the customers beating on the car too much?? jeff replied, this engine is "bullet proof" you could pound this engine as hard as possible, its a solid design, our dynos have proven this, and we overall kept this engine running since 02 because of its durability. the reason that this happens is that we change suppliers every now and then, and when we do, some of these parts arent made properly when we did a supplier change with the valves, and a result was that even on new engines, the valves wouldnt seat properly and cause misfires and backfires due to this.
so there ya have it, right from the guy who designs and diagnoses these engines every day. this is fact. and he basically said that this was going to happen sooner or later with my car. and that im lucky it happened while i still have a warranty
well, thats the status of my car as of now. i'll post up an update whenever i get word of anything.
