ive dropped my car off to the dealer. the guy insisted on pulling the 2.0 LSJ misfire thing again. my dad basically had to beat it out of his head that he's wrong. and since my car has 36101 miles on it, GM wont pay for the rental car until they know what the problem is after diagnoisis of the engine. so right now im carless and the dealers got it now. my dad told me that when he finds out whats wrong, hes demanding a new engine, and if they dont go for it and want to rebuild it, that it better be the entire head assembly and nothing less.

update 5-14-08:

well my dad talked to the customer service lady and she called the dealer and asked what was up with my car. my dad had called the dealer several times and he had recieved no answer from their phones, and he had been calling since the day before. so who of the any, she calls my dad back and she describes to him that they have been diagnosing it for a while, and when they had inspected the internals, they noticed that a lot of the valves are screwed up. and that its really bad. so right now they are debateing whether to a) rebuild the head assembly or b) give me a new longblock engine entirely.

so we inquired about a rental car, and the dealer still hasnt offered up one or contacted us on that. even though they already have diagnosed the problem. so i think the dealer's just trying to get back at my dad and me for having them look at this car, or that they are just trying to be ******. either way, its just reinforceing my stance on how bad of service these dealers have.

my dad also talked to Jeff, some engineer for the ecotec, and he said that the L61 engine is notorious for this problem with the valves seating properly. he said that he owns an 06 cobalt as well and that he sees it happen in these engines all the time down where he works. my dad asked why this was, is it the customers beating on the car too much?? jeff replied, this engine is "bullet proof" you could pound this engine as hard as possible, its a solid design, our dynos have proven this, and we overall kept this engine running since 02 because of its durability. the reason that this happens is that we change suppliers every now and then, and when we do, some of these parts arent made properly when we did a supplier change with the valves, and a result was that even on new engines, the valves wouldnt seat properly and cause misfires and backfires due to this.

so there ya have it, right from the guy who designs and diagnoses these engines every day. this is fact. and he basically said that this was going to happen sooner or later with my car. and that im lucky it happened while i still have a warranty

well, thats the status of my car as of now. i'll post up an update whenever i get word of anything.
good for you bro in my shop we'd send the head out to be worked on (if repairable) and done ur internals as well..no need for a new engine if the job can be done rite

p.s. told u it was a head problem lol

lol ya u were right. but u see, ive said it was an internal issue since day numoro uno (number 1 ) and within a week of driving it back in november, i could tell it was the valves not seating properly.

my biff with this damn car is that i have a flippin warranty and i knew what the problem was but every dealer i take it to doesnt seem to understand that they are wrong and that i know what im talking about.

UPDATE:

its now saterday night, and GM still hasnt decided what they are going to do yet. AND im still WITHOUT a rental car...............i HATE chevy service...............

update on my car.

today my dad called the dealer. its been 7 days since we dropped it off in its horrid condition. turns out they tried to order a new engine but GM service didnt let them. instead, im getting a new Head on the engine which my dad looked up what the cost was, and it ran 2800 dollars. which is good news!

they have stated they have some of the parts now, and that they all should be in by tomarrow with hopes that it will be ready by Wednesday. i wont be getting my hopes up but id be happy if it is.

o btw, for the cost of working on my car so far. ive gone through 2 transmission rebuilds and now i have a brand new tranny. now the motor being torn down and rebuilt.

cost? well i'll tell ya

1st rebuild = $2100
2nd rebuild = $2000
new tranny = $2500
rebuilt engine = $2800

That's rediculous.

So you are saying we should expect our engines to possibly fail like this?

I know my SS has about $6,000 in warranty repairs total time and a 17 page service history at this point. The price you pay for the first generation Cobalt. Funny thing is only 2things are mechnical which only amount to $300 the rest is cosmetic ****.

I swear this car was designed by a 3rd grader and built by a guy who failed middle school. The engineering of the interior trim components = epic fail.

untrue. You can file a lemon law at any time as long as it's within warranty.

I'd lemon mine but I am beyond warranty at this stage in the cars life.

haha me and james were just talking about this the other day. chevy did a poor job on this car. im not very happy with the way my car has been holding up either

i had to replace the **** stock tires at 35,000 miles...
rotors warped at 40,000 miles, so i had to replace rotors and pads...
shocks/struts are blown out and im only at 45,000....
key fob has broke 3 times!!!!
my front drivers door speaker is blown but the rest work fine.....
the amount of rattling in this car is ungodly due to the epic failure of the engineering of the interior trim components....

i know there are a lot of ppl out there who dont have any problems at all with their cars, but i have talked to older ppl who own cobalts and dont mod them or nething, and they are not happy with the way their interiors rattle or the ride quality after the first two years.

ya its been pretty bad with this car. not impressed to say the least.

o and the Chevy dealer NEVER gave me an option of getting a rental car. they refused throughout the entire process even though we asked all week.

Post good god!

UPDATE:

well if u have just noticed i have changed the title of the thread. well for starters, i called the dealer monday and they said they have ordered parts for rebuilding my motor and that they are waiting on some parts for tuesday, the car should be ready wenseday..............HA ya like im gonna believe that.

so wenseday comes, i call them up around 5:30 and ask, "so is my car ready?" response, "umm, no its not done" me, "how much was done to it?" response, "i dont know sir, the tech's left at 5:00 and its 5:30 so i cant ask them, call tomarrow for an update." ..................wasnt surprised......................

but heres what they found was wrong according to engine diagnosis

Point of Failure: pulled cylinder head and found #1 exhaust lifter came apart, rocker arm is off, both #2 exhaust valves came apart and rockers off, #4 exhaust lifter came apart and rocker is off, rocker arms scored into cam shaft, cylinder head scored
List of Parts Damaged: cylinder head , cam shaft x 2 , rocker arms x 16, timing chain kit, valve adjusters x 16
