I've heard stories on photo forums of people with filters on their lens and bumped them into walls or whatever and it breaking the filter resulting in the fragments of glass from the filter scratching the front element of their lens. As for quality, seems to be a 50/50 love hate relationship with filters. Some people like them for their effects, while others say that the filter (while doing it's job) makes images not as sharp or drowns out the colors. So I just use the hood for any accidental bumps with my lens if the cap is off.

 

hmm good points, I'm going to do some test shots tomorrow, filter and non filter see what happens, any variables i should use?

 

Manual mode on a tripod with shutter release cable.
Mirror lock up, if your camera does it.
Same aperture, iso, shutter speed, and white balance for the shots.

If you don't have the tripod or release cable just wing it as best as possible by sitting the camera on a counter or something to take the pics.

Oh and shoot in RAW format so your camera doesn't do any in camera editing.
