Nah, I just commandeered a little side table, lol.
The first shot is 20 seconds exposure.
The other one is 25.
I added "mimic HDR" filter, upped the saturation and contrast a little, and the last one I went further to get that "posterized" look.

Capable camera, however if you're in the market for around that price range I'd grab a nicely used D90. The D90 has the internal auto focus motor which gives you much more flexibility in your lens choices.
I had both a D5000 followed by a D90, and it was a welcome upgrade.

If you can find it, the D7000 is the same sensor as the D5100 but improves from the D90. But otherwise, having the D5100 is a-okay. I wouldn't trade up for quite a while.

When you buy lenses though - think down the line. Think far down the line. If you want to upgrade to full frame in the future contemplate FX lenses when you buy them.
Because of the crop factor, you want a 35mm to do street art (35 crop = 50 full) but if you want the Nikkor 50mm, go for the FX lenses, they're better and surprisingly cheaper.
