I had home made Vtec for a while. Below 4500 rpm I only had 75% boost and 8 degrees of timing, then a 4500 it would jump from 8 degrees to 25 degrees and get 100% boost. OMG when Etec (lol) kicked in, the tires didn't stand a chance! I need to get a video it sometime!
It uses seperate cam lobes for high and low RPM, and when VTEC engages it switches from low to high cam profile, effectively changing the engines powerband

you practically have to to hold traction, man. When I get a new supercharger in my car, I am going to boost limit 1st and 2nd to the absolute max boost i can have while holding traction.
We don't make fun of the technology, we make fun of the way Honda owners make it seem like their VTEC is equivalent to forced induction or something similar. Like, "I was a little behind then my VTEC kicked in and I totally owned him." This is like a SuperSport rider saying, "I kept losing in the straights then I brought the bike into the powerband and suddenly I was faster!"... um.... DUH. If your engine makes is best power at 4+k rpm then run it there.
if Hondas could stay in Vtec it would be pretty nice actually
my friends RSX-S w/ intake is all top end but I like the vtec kick in...it reminds me of nitrous, just higher up in the rpms and a little weaker.
