HackAbuse's CRX Project

Well here's my new project car. You know, the one that I sold all my parts for. Shes going to be a street legal auto-x and track car. None of the luxury crap. Pure bare performance. no electric windows, no power steering, no A/c or heat, no radio, no interior. My goal is to basically have a large street legal go-kart in the 13s at least.

Its a 1988 Honda CRX Si

Pictures:

Pictures of the engine rebuild:

Current Mods

Engine:
B18A1 from Integra
Cylinder Head Bored and Resleeved .02" over
New OEM Valvetrain
DC Sports Header
Unknown Cat-Back Exhaust
Unknown Intake

Transmission
YS1 Cable Tranny
XTR Stage 2 Street Clutch
Prothane Tranny Mounts
Unknown Short shifter

Suspension:
Eibach Sportlines
Unknown Rear Strut Bar

Interior
Who needs a ******* interior?!

Parts Waiting to go in
11.8:1 High Compression Pistons
New Rod Bearings

Problems/Plans

Engine
1. The Idle Air Control Valve is beat, so the car idles like its got Stage 4 cams in it, fluctuating between 200-2000rpm, it's really embarassing. Idle Video

2. The Ignition has a slight gremlin. While driving the ignition periodically cuts out (once every 10 miles or so). One in every ten occurences the car will completely stall out and will refuse to start for some time. 50-80% of the time the car runs fine though. I think it may be either a bad engine ground or the dizzy.

3. The piston rings are shot, the car barely passes a compression test. It also smokes like a stack of burning tires, and smells like ass. Very embarrassing. The car came with brand new high compression pistons and rings.

4. The Radiator fan has a cracked bearing, it barely spins and makes a loud squealing noise 25% of the time.

5. The wiring is a night mare, I will be redoing a large portion of it.

Exterior

1. As much as I like the custom Ricer primer black finish, its gotta go.

2. The custom projectors and Kustom JDM clear corners have to go, stock lighting all around here.

3. If I can find one, I want to get a Wings West 6 peice body kit, they are extremely clean looking without any flashy ricer crap all around.

Interior

1. The dash has been hacked to ****, I plan on fiberglassing over all the air vents and radio/HVAC controls and making it a very clean finish, I may fiberglass in a guage pod onto the dash somewhere.

2. The car came with some cheesy racing seats, they have to go!

3. The carpet and center console have to go, no interior is a good interior.

4. As much as I hate the Giant Ricer Tach, I'm going to have to keep it, because the stock tach doesnt work.

I will update as I progress

Considering its rust-free, has a brand new clutch, and a newly re-built engine, AND I paid only $380. I'd say its not too bad

With a little work, that thing could be sweet. I'm not much for honda's but that would be a cool project car. I've rode in one before with B16 swap, and it just reminded me of a go kart, pretty cool.

Nice choice of project cars! CRX's are nice, they just aren't too safe in crashes. Passive seatbelts and no side airbags from what I remember. Just be safe, and you'll be pwning!

CRXs are some of the fastest accelrating cars around.

I'm pretty sure there aren't any airbags, period.

I might invest in roll cage if I can come up with the funds

It doesnt have power steering as it is, and I dont have a problem with it. As long as the car is moving, its just as easy as having power steering.

Power steering is over-rated. My old neon used to keep throwing the belt. After getting fed up with replacing the belt, I just drove the car without it. The only real annoyance was parking lots or turning the wheels while the car was not moving. Sad thing, was the A/C was on the same belt as the A/C, which sucked come those hot summer days, but it did free up a few horses, which is never a bad thing.

But HackAbuse is right, at normal driving speed, its almost indistinguishable from having a working power steering belt. The only time I felt it was heavy was when it first came off. I mean going from power steering mid-turn to no power steering, lets just say it'll catch you off guard. But after a few days, you adjust, and all is well. Also, it really strengthens your arm muscles after a while.

those things didn't come with power steering? Moving in the streets is one thing... but zipping back and forth in the cones is something else.

Its a little different when you're driving around in a car that's 1000 pounds lighter than a normal sport compact. I've had the power steering on my balt cut out before because of my system, and its hard. But on the CRX, the car is so light, that even when the car is not moving it's still very easy to turn the wheels

Damn straight it's ugly, lol

It's gonna take alot of work to make it pretty.

Reason's I picked this over a cobalt:

My cobalt cost 60 times more. This car is disposable.

My cobalt will never see 13s without at least 10Gs

I need a seperate daily driver and project.

My cobalt will never perform anything like my CRX

WHAT?!

In order to have that CRX as reliable and perform like a stock balt your going to have a lot of work and time in it.

I thought the same thing about my 92 civic ex but something always goes wrong with an old car and it never performs how you want it to.
