last pics of my ugly cobalt
so ive been around here for a while now, since around october 2007. i bought my 05 ss/sc at the end of october 2007 and its been a great car. 235k km and the only major failure has been the firewall breaking around the clutch master cylinder, which turned out to be a bit of a nightmare but i got it sorted. last year i started having issues with clearcoat pealing off the hood, and it soon started all over the roof and tops of the doors, the paint is in pretty rough shape. with having my 944 as my fun weekend toy and wanting to have a truck for a daily i was at a bit of a crossroads with the cobalt. with the paint the way it is its not worth much, maybe a couple grand tops, and if i went through the work and cost of a repaint ($3k minimum) it might be worth $4k, so it didnt make a lot of sense.

You should start a parts thread.
|
Are you parting it out verses selling whole?
|
Damn, car actually looks really clean besides the peeling. Is there no rust on that thing? |
ok one more picture of where it is now
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cob...81a5e491b2.jpg i never said i was getting rid of it, im just getting rid of the ugly lol (yes im an asshole). yea its getting painted. i had absolutely no intentions of repainting it, but my boss decided that while he is on vacation he would have our painter come in and paint it, sort of a christmas bonus (despite the fact i dont actually work for him right now due to my health). the car isnt in terrible shape, the pics in the shop are after a couple hours of scrubbing everything with degreaser. it did actually clean up pretty well. there is no rust in the car as of now, but the pinch weld needs some rust converter applied. |
Hes not getting rid of it lol
|
What a rollercoaster of emotions |
Way to not be clear on your intentions
Well, at least it's getting the facelift it deserves. |
did nobody pick up on the fact that everything that was removed from the car was stuff you have to remove for paint (bumpers, all the lights, door handles, etc)? and that the bumpers were sitting on the table next to the car fully disassembled?
i do like how the first reply is about making a parts thread. savage... |
Yeah I was wondering why you took the panels off what looked to be a solid car. But now a days with all the partouts you never know.
|
Going back with the same color this time or what?

Yep. Legitimately thought that you had enough with the cobalt and already started parting it out - wasn't a knock against it.
|
Lol not going to lie when I was reading the first post I thought the same thing. But when I saw the thread he had posted the second part and saw he wasnt selling it but fixing it
|
It's quite clear I didn't have the foresight for such a determination.
|
i was gonna try and keep updating it everyday, but i guess i forgot.
i did a little mod on the front bumper, i shaved the bowtie. little bit of trimming, some panel bond and reinforcement mesh and it looks like it was never there https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/fK...g=w509-h904-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/k4...Q=w509-h904-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/g5...=w1608-h904-no the pealing clear gave my the painter a hell of a fight, the clear was rock hard and brittle. it wasnt that it was just delaminated, it was actually spider cracked. basically every horizontal surface had to be stripped down to the base coat because of it. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Wj...=w1608-h904-no everything is slick sand (high build primer) https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pD...=w1608-h904-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/8-...=w1608-h904-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ji...=w1608-h904-no and the car in the booth being masked for paint https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/If...=w1608-h904-no as of now its all painted, but i wasnt there to take pics when it was finished. you will have to wait till tomorrow for those. |
Nice update!
|
sweet! Hows the lower inside edge of the doors? I know alot of the cobalts paint rubs off the doors then they rust on the very bottom.
|
Nice update, can't wait to see the finished product.
|
Is it tomorrow yet?
|
This thing better be purple or something cool.
|
Wow you didn't mess around
|
I'm sure the pictures don't do it justice, but that prep work looks great.
I've been debating if I should do some body work this year from all the stone chips and I still have a couple of small gouges on the side when I bought the car. Definitely going to need to Bondo that shiz but I'm not comfortable in taking those steps yet. More practice needed when it gets warm enough. |
Love me a good debadge.
|
its all back together now. all i can say is dont paint your car, the disassembly and reassembly is way too much work lol. now i just gotta clean all the body dust out of my interior.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/as...=w1608-h904-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/8U...=w1608-h904-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/9b...=w1608-h904-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/XN...=w1608-h904-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/6H...=w1608-h904-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/k8...=w1608-h904-no ignore the wheels, id love to have my 18s on the car but it is still winter. im really liking the shaved bowtie on the front, it changed the whole look of the car. |
Nice! I think the final product was def worth removing everything
|
Came out great

part of what im trying to do is get the car a little less noticed, the cops here are going insane on modded cars of late, issuing vehicle inspection orders for anything they feel is wrong. the problem is the cops dont even know the laws and issue inspections for things that arent an issue, such as the car not having 1" of gap from the tire to the fender, thats not even a thing in the inspection books. if they view the exhaust too loud, despite the fact it might be stock, they send you for inspection. worst part is you can have the car inspected and pass, and 2 hours later get pulled over and given another vehicle inspection order, and there is no recourse. so what im going for is to make the car blend in a little better without going totally stock. i already changed out the 6000k bulbs to some 4300k bulbs in my projectors, im going to be getting a set of yyz springs to replace my sagged out pedders and bring the car up a bit, planning to replace the muffler (now 8 or 9 year old magnaflow) with a new one, along with a smaller exhaust tip. and not having pealing paint goes a long way. in the end, this is my daily driver and i dont need to get hassled. |
That paint looks great
$5 says they're going to pull you over for not having brand insignia, and cite some made-up rule like "we need to know the make of the car" blah blah blah. |
That looks really nice. Great that you liked it enough to save it. I'm gonna miss mine, but cars aren't forever. Awesome little beasts.
|
The car looks great! I really like the front with the way you took out the bow tie. Did you all run a coat of epoxy under the paint to help prevent rust or did you say screw it and just paint it normally?

right you are. i was considering mounting the plate directly to the bumper (no plate bracket) and bending the bottom under the opening, but you can get a ticket then for modifying the plate. it cant be in the window, they can write you multiple tickets for that. in the end i just stuck it in the plate bracket, not worth the potential hassle.
