so ive been around here for a while now, since around october 2007. i bought my 05 ss/sc at the end of october 2007 and its been a great car. 235k km and the only major failure has been the firewall breaking around the clutch master cylinder, which turned out to be a bit of a nightmare but i got it sorted. last year i started having issues with clearcoat pealing off the hood, and it soon started all over the roof and tops of the doors, the paint is in pretty rough shape. with having my 944 as my fun weekend toy and wanting to have a truck for a daily i was at a bit of a crossroads with the cobalt. with the paint the way it is its not worth much, maybe a couple grand tops, and if i went through the work and cost of a repaint ($3k minimum) it might be worth $4k, so it didnt make a lot of sense.
i had thought about using the car as a donor for a df goblin, but i really dont have the room for a car that has to be kept indoors, and its a little redundant to have 2 cars built for the same purpose (road coarse/street). i decided today it was time to get rid of my ugly cobalt and move on. here are the last couple photos after i started stripping it apart.
i never said i was getting rid of it, im just getting rid of the ugly lol (yes im an *******).
yea its getting painted. i had absolutely no intentions of repainting it, but my boss decided that while he is on vacation he would have our painter come in and paint it, sort of a christmas bonus (despite the fact i dont actually work for him right now due to my health).
the car isnt in terrible shape, the pics in the shop are after a couple hours of scrubbing everything with degreaser. it did actually clean up pretty well. there is no rust in the car as of now, but the pinch weld needs some rust converter applied.
did nobody pick up on the fact that everything that was removed from the car was stuff you have to remove for paint (bumpers, all the lights, door handles, etc)? and that the bumpers were sitting on the table next to the car fully disassembled?
i do like how the first reply is about making a parts thread. savage...

When I looked at this thread on mobile, I was at first like damn he's gonna sell it. Then went wait that looks like paint prep, but he just said he wasn't going to paint it...must be a part out since you would likely get more for individual parts then the complete car. Glad to see you'll be keeping it instead of selling/parting out.
Lol not going to lie when I was reading the first post I thought the same thing. But when I saw the thread he had posted the second part and saw he wasnt selling it but fixing it
i was gonna try and keep updating it everyday, but i guess i forgot.
i did a little mod on the front bumper, i shaved the bowtie. little bit of trimming, some panel bond and reinforcement mesh and it looks like it was never there
the pealing clear gave my the painter a hell of a fight, the clear was rock hard and brittle. it wasnt that it was just delaminated, it was actually spider cracked. basically every horizontal surface had to be stripped down to the base coat because of it.
everything is slick sand (high build primer)
and the car in the booth being masked for paint
as of now its all painted, but i wasnt there to take pics when it was finished. you will have to wait till tomorrow for those.
I'm sure the pictures don't do it justice, but that prep work looks great.
I've been debating if I should do some body work this year from all the stone chips and I still have a couple of small gouges on the side when I bought the car. Definitely going to need to Bondo that shiz but I'm not comfortable in taking those steps yet. More practice needed when it gets warm enough.
its all back together now. all i can say is dont paint your car, the disassembly and reassembly is way too much work lol. now i just gotta clean all the body dust out of my interior.
ignore the wheels, id love to have my 18s on the car but it is still winter. im really liking the shaved bowtie on the front, it changed the whole look of the car.
