My first rig shot
you could do it that way but wouldn't it be easier to just set the shutter time and have the cam give out the right aperture?

hey mike, i would also try setting your exposure pointing at the sky in god mode and just leaving those settings when you take the shot. would love to see how that would come out. as long as you're at f/11 or so it should come out ok i think. so many possibilities. mad props for the setup and having the nerves to do this.
Ok parts this (this is how I did it, there are several different ways to do it tho)
(2) - Manfrotto Super Clamp #035 - $25/each - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...p_without.html
(1) - Manfrotto Ball head #484 - $45 - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...Ball_Head.html
(2) - Avenger F1000 pump suction cup (made by Manfrotto to my surprise) $48.50/each - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...with_Baby.html
(1) - 10' x 1" EMT (electrical conduit) tubing - $10 - Home Depot / Lowes / Etc.
Then you need a 3/8" x 2" Hex bolt and corresponding nylon lock nut to mount the ball head. I bought 2 sets of these so that I could put the ball head at two locations along the pole. Other people used another super clamp for the ball head, but I like this better because its cheaper and its less weight than another clamp.
Then all you have to do is drill out however many 3/8" holes you need along the pole. I put one about 6" from the end and one about 18" from that one. So far it seems like the one on the end works best. Then just follow the instructions for the suction cups, clamp the pole into place. If you want to take the pics by yourself you will need a wireless shutter trigger or a long wired shutter trigger which i what i used.
Yeah I am going to play with it a lot this weekend hopefully...now that I know it works Im going to go out and find some parking garages or something during the day, see what i can come up with.

I bought the suction cups and ball head from them ( couldnt find them on ebay
)
I did get the clamps on ebay, got 4 for $65, so actally i will probably be selling 2 of them as i wont need them

not sure how it could be sectioned. Would be nice tho if possible
maybe a larger diameter pipe and then a smaller one (to slide in and out) with a bolt to lock it in place, just drill holes to extend and retract? You can also use that spray foam insulation to make the pipe more ridgide(sp?)
some of my car shots i've metered from the sky and turn out great. just a suggestion. like i said, there are many ways to go about to this and just thought i'd recommend something to see what the outcome would be.
Possibly...next size up tho was 1/2" bigger...I would just be worried about stability and any unnecessary vibrations.
Looks great!
I recently got into photography with my d40 a couple months ago. I went out on the e-way with some buddys trying to take some good rolling shots but I must have been shooting with a huge aperture, rather than a smaller one because all of my shots were frozen still.
I haven't been out shooting since, so I take it I have to shoot with a small aperture to acheive the blurred look?

I suggest reading this book, you will learn a lot:

This may be a dumb question but aside from having to keep two cars lined up right, would it not be easier to have this rig on a car beside or in front in order to save on photoshopping time? I am not by any means a photo guru or anything but I really want a moving shot like this.

The best thing about a rig are the different angles you can hit the car from and you can do it by yourself, you don't need another car plus 2 other people to drive.
Also only having to move at about 2-3mph is a good feature as well
If you can keep the camera still and moving at the same exact speed as the car, then it doesn't matter how you do it.

Yep. And with long exposures, any little difference in speed or shake in your hand will cause the car to be out of focus. Another reason why having the camera attached to the car is a plus.
