this past summer i just graduated the autobody program down here. thats how i painted my car I did it there. ur talking about the stud welder. That works great if the panel needs body work and paint. PDR is removing dents without damaging the paint. Used mainly on every day dents, its not really for collision related damage. its for regular small dents. They dont teach u it in autobody school but you might discuss the concept of it briefly. It takes AWHILE to get good at, as every dent you come across is different, every car has different bracing, glue in different spots etc. and you need to learn how much pressure you can put on the backside of the metal before you create a high int he panel. You have to be careful not too put too much high's or else youll stretch the metal causing it to flip flop. It just takes alot of practice to get good at it and its why you wont do it in autobody school. it would take a whole 2 semesters before you can literally start removing any decently difficult dent from a car. You use lights to see the low spots in the panel and to find ur tools tip under the surface and then u massage the dents out. heres so pics i found off google to show u what i mean

tools:
stuff like this.

Hail damage

See how using lights really bring out the low's in the panels. Use position the dents in a certain spot of the light to see what your doing

and then u can go through windows like this:

u you drill a hole in a door jamb to get access to the backside of a dent. We then use OEM looking black plugs to plug hole the hole when were done, customers never even notice the plugs as they look factory. You can pake good money doing PDR as its a skill not alot of people have. If a dealer has a dent a car they can pay a body shop 400 bucks to sand, fill, prime, repaint/blend the panel. Or they can pay us depending on the dent anywhere from 50-100 bucks to remove it. The dents pictured here are the easiest type of dent we see, a normal circular door ding. but we see **** alot bigger, sharper, and more effed up generally. big old creases down the side of the door and **** liek that. Dealer/used car dealer choose guys like us everytime over body work unless its something theres just no way we can get it out to look right where a customer wouldnt notice it. if the metal is hit hard enough that it screws up the body line and pinches it in spots and has alot of high stress areas, theres no way i can use a pick and push that metal back from the back side and it still have a flat perfect reflection, I can get it flat but itll have pin marks in it from having to put alot of pressure on the backside of the panel. Alot of times the local bodyshops will use us to rough out a dent to they can do less work, lets say a door is hit and caved it, well PDR it out and rough it out, itll have a bunch of highs in it, look like a bunch of spikes, but the panel will be flat, then tey just have to DA it with 80, lay a thin coat of bondo on or putty, and then sand and prime, they dont have to dick around with all the metal straightening and stud welders and hammer and dollying and takign door panels off etc.

thats really all that makes it worth it is when the customer is super happy about the result. Matter of fact i need some advice from you on black cars. I think we need to pick up a less agressive compound since our polish doesnt want to remove the swirls it leaves so im curious as to what you use. we never have a problem unless its a black car and tommorow morning i have to finish that infinity and its gonna be a nighmare. find myself constantly going over the same spots. cleaning my pad, putting a small amount of polish, working it in a slow RPM in a small area at a time, bring it outside, and its still not right. I know were gonna have to pick up new ****

Ah ic what always confused me is the elastic properties of metal when dents are made there's a small high around the edge of it how do "push" the dent out without having highs all over or are those dents the ones that are too deep for you?

we have to relieve the stress before the dent really wants to come out. The eyebrow that your talking about we have to knock down to remove the tension of the dent so itll allow us to flatten it out without putting a high. High's happen all the time and there not the end of the world, alot of times there necessary to remove a dent, and all it takes to fix a high spot is a wooden golf T and a hammer, we use razor blades and sharpen the tip of the golf T, and find that small high spot in the light and lightly tap it back to level. The wood doesnt damage the paint. Alot of times a sharp crease in a car, like this "V" we tap down the edges of the crease to make it like this "U" and then its easier to work its way out. We do the same with body line dents, knock the eyebrow down around it, turn a sharp small dent into a bigger shallow dent, and then just lift it up. also we wrap duct tape around the tool tip if needed so its not as sharp and putting high's, but u need a sharper tip to easily see where ur tool is behind the panel

Ah ic thats really cool i just never knew the process and problems i could've possibly forseen. I'm working on a B20 teg with a GT60-1 he ran into some unfortunate luck after it was aligned and his wheel fell off and he put it in the ditch so right after i put the new axle in it and steering rack we have it in our class so it just compounded onto our hail dent problem, but when that's done i'm taking my car in fixing the few dinger's i have and evo modding it. Then hopefully my shop will be cleaned up and have the proper equipment and i'll get my LSx RX7 and i kinda want to paint it cyber gray or satin black. But you never know what's gonna happen next with what.
