I just took the low spoiler off mine this weekend and put on the high spoiler. The high spoiler sure does make a difference on the road. It is much more stable. I assumed it was the snow tires (16") that I have on the sport red balt because the black ss/sc has the blizzak LM22 V rated tires (and the high wing) and handles like a dream.
Glad I switched back......

i can assure you that the high spoiler made no difference at all in your cars handling.

But I can assure you it did. I could drive both back to back and the balt with the low wing would wander going down the highway. Since I put the high wing on I don't have that problem any longer. I know this has been the topic of conversation before but my experiences with high a low spoilers on various cars throughout the last few years tells me the cars are much more stable with a high spoiler. Try running up on a tractor trailer with a low wing car. You can feel the turbulence.....with a high wing it is very minimal.
I drive my car over 500 miles each week so I know every squeek, rattle, etc, etc.

A normal car, driven at highway speeds, isn't going to be going fast enough for a spoiler to produce enough downforce to significantly affect handling for good or ill. And of course, on a front-wheel drive car, a spoiler on back wouldn't help even if it could generate enough force; you'd want the downforce on the front wheels, not the back wheels. A spoiler will, however, cause enough extra air resistance at highway speeds to noticeably reduce your fuel economy, top speed, and acceleration.

This has been debated some time on alot of the websites.....I would like to see someone actually prove that no downforce is being produced at say 70-80 mph. So you're saying the resistance (or drag) is providing no downforce. There is no difference in fuel economy. Both balts get 28-30 mpg.

well there will be downforce, just not enough and at the wrong spot. i dont feel like measuring the spoiler and doing the math but if you want to then here is how you would do it.

L = 1/2 * p V^2 * S * Cl

Where :

L = Lift
p = Density of air ( 1.225 Kg/m^3 at sea level)
V = velocity of air
S = Wing plan surface area
Cl = coefficient of lift.

A high lift wing for a car spoiler could probably produce
a Cl of 1 - 1.5

So let's say the wing is 1.5 metres long and .15 metres wide,
.225m^2 and the car is doing 50 m/s (180 km/h)

L = .5 * 1.225 * 50^2 * .225 * 1.5

L = 5176 Newtons
That's an estimated increase in effective weight of 52.7Kg

Now aerodynamic forces are proportional to the square of velocity
so at half the speed, you have 1/4 of the lift and 1/4 of the drag.

edit: well i decided to do the math and at 70mph it would put about 25 pounds of down force on the rear of the car, not enough to do much really.

Did you know that the old Trans Am's from the 70's with the spoilers they had created over 600 pounds of down force at 60 mph? Yup Yup its true. And after that it just increases.

mathematically speaking that would be impossible.

Well I spent several days researching Bernoulli's Priniciple and it's application to automotive aerodynamics. This included pulling out the big gun (an NHRA Top Fuel Team member) who knows somebody who knows somebody. The question was specifically related to the SS/SC.
Bernoulli's principle would not really apply to the SS/SC wing as it it not really a wing.....it is a spoiler. The high spoiler on this particular vehicle is designed to provide stability and reduce drag by directing the airflow; due to the slope from the top of the vehicle to the rear of the decklid. The difference I have experienced with the two spoilers (low and high) is the increase in stability. According the my source the SS/SC has a cd of .324. That figure was recorded with the high spoiler.

OK i know this is the wrong thread to post this in .. but i've already posted in the official wing trading section and gotten no responses. I have an 0'7 SS/SC with the low profile wing looking for the high profile spoiler I am willing to buy or trade .....If anyone with 1 is interested just pm thanks
