Painter's Thread:

I know theres a few people on this forum who paint car's, or go to school for autobody and paint car's like myself, so lets see some of the work you did. Doesnt have to be anything crazy, lets just see some fresh paint!

Nissan Pathfinder me and this kid Justin painted today:
Was gold, they needed some body work done, and wanted it black.

Just basecoat:

Cleared:

Honda Valve Cover:

When I did my rims:

And we attempted to try a carbon fiber look on my computer desk. Eh doesnt look like carbon fiber but it looks cool.

Now post up what you got. I know Liz has some sick pics

its pretty cool. Next week im bringing my sisters white altima in. She likes to crash into things at slow speeds and beat the hell outta her bumper. And of course its never her fault. All the scuffs down her front and rear bumpers and the dent in her driver door were people who "dont know how to drive"

Yea its all my classes. I take structural damage 2, non structural damage 2, and painting and refinishing 2. Summer I take Special Finishes (learning flames and ****), plastics and adhesives, and insurance estimating. All classes in the same building, all right after one another. so we dont even stop. i dont know what class im in half the time becasue its all the same ****. I straightened some frames from a roll over a few weeks ago, and now we do personal projects for the rest of the year. We just buy our own paint, unless your working on a "customers" car which is faculty. Then they buy it and you spray it

I wouldnt if I was doing my own vehicle, but out philosophy is pretty much that if you can tape it up in 5 minutes, and you have to remove a half an hours worth of **** to remove that piece, just tape it up. If I was working on my own **** yea I would remove everything. But hes trying to teach us how to paint if we worked in a dealer and time = money. But those rear door handles I removed at 1st, but when i removed it the metal rod fell in the door that attaches to the latch and it was a pain in the ass to fish out of there, so we decided to just tape em up and make sure we get behind them. Plus it gives you something to grab when you have to open the door to get inside the jams for base and clear

Oh and thats not me in the 4th pic, thats my buddy whos ass crack was hangin out all day

Id love to bro, i like doing **** like that and it would be awsome working on a cobalt, but youd need to get your **** down here Maybe when I move back to NY i can do it for you, i got a decent gun if you got a decent air compressor.

Heres the body work I did on the POS nissan and this is the color it was b4. Black is a pretty crappy color to paint your car if its already got few dents in it and you just dont care about it. Itll show all the imperfections more then a lighter color but people just get boners for black for some reason. If I could repaint my car, I would do it a metallic Orange and black. Like lay silver down, and put a transparent ornage over it. and Two tone it black, and put some orange flake in the black. I think that would look so badass.

Now would some1 else please post some pics!

looks good but just wait till that car starts to peel back lol definatly take out door handles and such... even at a dealer redo= mucho loss for supplys and freebie for everyone who worked on it. also wait untill u get some wax and grease remover/ prep sulovent come out behind a handle or even water... thats another redo that sucks.... personal expreiance the 30 min to remove a handle is worth it when a redo u have to do it for free anyhow and u have to pay for paint suplys again.

Are those blowtherm booths ? and waht kinda satas 3500 digitals? if i was u i would check out an iwata they are amazing guns for like half the price they spray alot better than the satas i have( personal prefrence i guess)( i also have 3500 digitals, sata rp's, )

also for the carbon fiber look u almost have it... u need 3 layers the first is the black , then u get a gunmetal gray, then get the final silver color and u need to move the paten 3 times not 2 times because that will give it the 3D affect of real carbon. ( figured u are using it already but use the anti slide crap for drawars)

The Sata is my teachers gun. I heard the others are good but I dont have the money for either right now. I have a cheap Sharp gun, but if you pay attention to how its spraying, the gun doesnt matter as much. We have some 3M guns and the Sata sprays just fine for me. And when the car peels back well let them come back, They didnt pay any money for labor. But I honestly dont believe it will peel. It was prepped correctly and sprayed. I honestly dont think any1 can critique a paint job when they arent there see'ing it. This is probobly the 2nd all over I have ever done, im getting the hand of it.

Iv heard stories of a guy spraying a mystic cobra that was hit in the quarter panel and sprayed it 4x because he couldnt get the panel to match the door when he walked around it. :face palm:

Oh the carbon fiber look, i actually didnt spray that, that was my teacher, but it was our 1st time ever even attempting it. We used a **** load of pearls, but moving it to make that 3d effect is a good idea. We did black, and then grey, but then we did gold on top instead of silver. and we didnt put enough gold so its doesnt pop as much. We did a kids louvers on his camaro and we put more gold pearl on the final coat and it came out alot brighter and better. But we didnt even move the paten when we sprayed it, i dont have any carbon fiber on my car so i forgot what it actually even looked like lol. i was liek Dude thats it! came home, googled it, and was like...oooohhhh. lmao! i wanna do my whole desk so when i do that ill have to move it around. How did you move it? just like slightly to the side for the next coat?
But none the less, comments are welcome, im learning. Lets see some pics!

gestapoo.....not trying to step on your toes or anything so dont take it like that........but im going to be flat out honest in saying this. most dealers do crap work and hense why you will never ever catch me working for a dealer unless it because im hurting for money. personally i dont think they should be teaching you guys how to work in a commision shop. they should be teaching you guys how to do everything correctly and you will get faster as you learn. theres many ways to do things correctly.

heres a perfect example of what happened to me today and i wish i had my camera to take pics for you to show why crap needs to be removed and not taped. i almost went and killed the insurance writer since now i have to blend the rear door. so we get this honda accord in. replaced the fender, blending the hood and door. well another shop panel painted the door before. ok great.......so im helping my prepper(something you will rarely see a commision painter do) prep the car. sand the door down with 1000 grit like i normally do and the scuffing it over. after i get down i dry the water and as im blowing the door off a big chunk of clear comes off.....about the size of a quarter..... im like you gotta be kididng....anyways i just take my blow gun and just continue blowing where it peeled and by the time it stopped i ended up blowing a 16" long by 10" wide square of peeled paint from a previous shop. to give you an idea thats almost the entire door.

so basically now i got stuck feathering all their bull **** out and priming the door and im now stuck blending the rear door for a good color match . **** 3 stage colors...... see this could have happened to you in a dealership where time is money... you would have been screwed if you had to fix that..... luckily i work hourly.

i see you use sata guns...AWESOME CHOICE...i do aswell! i have 4 3000's and the sata primer and polyester guns. i like iwatas too but i do not like them as much for solvent based products.... on the other hand i find that iwatas are suprierior when it comes to waterborne being that they cause more atomization. if yours working in a county that requires waterborne sata does save you some money with their newer guns due to the fact that they have stainless internals and the water wont kill them. last i was told the iwatas either need to be converted or you need to buy a specific waterbourne gun

Oh i know man i apologize if i got defensive, i actually was editing my post when you typed this lol.

And Holy crap that sucks but we see that all the time. We get piles of CRAP cars all the time since were the college and if your a student you can get your car painted for free + cost of materials. So people who dont wanna spend money come to us with there dented, painted 4x load of ass cars for us to paint. I dont think iv blown off a chunk of paint as big as you did but I took some hefty pieces of **** off of cars that werent properly prepped. That sucks. Then having to wet or dry sand all that after you prime. Ugh. But im pretty lucky with my teacher cause hes cool as ****. Hes teaching us to try to save some time in doing things but hes doing his best to teach us how to do things the right way. Hard for him to focus on one project when theres like 10 things going on the shop at one time. Things slip by, door handles may have been one of them.

Post up some of your work, id like to see it

I honestly dont know man. Depends on if theres any body work that has to be done, and the cost of the materials. And then whatever that shop estimates will be the labor cost. Every place will be different. Nicksredline will know better then me on pricing. Materials arent cheap though, ill tell you that right now.

Its gotta be a couple grand at least. If I were you, id prep my car myself and then bring it in for paint to save hours on labor lol. Sand it all down with some 600 grit or something, scuff up all the jams, remove your door panels and trim, and take it to the shop.

lol yea, theres some trash in it. Especially in the computer desk, dont stand around it in a hoodie but thats what needs to be done, wetsand and buff still on the nissan. But remember the paintbooth is the best lighting that will ever see. Half of that **** you wont see once you pull it out of the booth. Well pull it out of the booth, park it in the sun, and mark where theres trash to wetsand and buff out

i rarely take pics lol. i just havent found the need to. i do have some pics of my buddies nissan 240 valve cover i finished up last night. ill grab the camera from work tomorow and upload them. ford fp purple for the base and then acura silver nh-623-m(a) for the lettering. right now im just working on normal cars so nothing worth taking pics of...although i do have a brand new acura zdx with like 4 miles on it that just came in. gotta do both doors because someone scratched it during transport. i just painted a c6 vette convertible(complete) that we did a z06 fender, bumper, quarter body swap on. looks sick but im waiting for parts to come in. when it gets back together and i re-buff the car since i know the body guys wll scratch it ill post the pics up for that. its been the only worthwhile pic car ive done in awhile. no ones wanting custom work right now. cobalts getting a cf trunk and hood soon though and a koni lip...

and i know whatyour saying about repainting over color match....its a bitch but an art to do it. thats why theres peope just dedicated to making variets. im still learning here and there to this day. colors keep getting more additives to them as the years go by.

yea iv yet to color match yet, so far id done just whole panels and pieces. Doing a Z06 must be sweet. Iv yet to spray waterborn. We learned alot about them, but havent spray one yet. I dont think my teacher has much experience with them, and i dont know how manditory it is where im at but I know soon im sure it will be almost everywhere. Next week when I do that nissan ill have to colormatch. Its a white pearl I believe. Should be one of the tougher color matches to do. gonna be doing alot of spray out cards till i get it right.

lol.....3 stage......lol......its all about finding the correct number of base and mid coats in combination. a lot of companies are starting to release 2 stage formulas of ti-coat colors.....its a fail though lol. this zdx that came in is a funky color. its like the ppg vibrance deck copper. not going to be fun matching that at all with it being a brand new acura color.....stupid honda your **** never matches.

what paint line are you guys using over there?
