Shortblock Completed!

Here it is....this motor is turning out to be more badass than I had planned. The Mahle pistons I got with the Eagle rotating assembly are unbelievable quality!

Next up, the block is going to be painted Chevy Red with POR15. Then the next step in the assembly...I have the complete heads and intake already, and I just ordered the lifters, pushrods, rocker arms, oil pan/pump/pickup etc....so the next update will hopefully be a complete long block!

Meanwhile, the work on the car continues. The frame is painted on the passenger side, and I need to finish the rest of it. The engine compartment is painted, and I just need to paint the A arms. Then Im going to redo some of the wiring harnesses and vacuum lines, and it should be ready for the new motor.

Mahle pistons are awesome quality.. Us LT1 guys swear by them! I am concerned about the eagle crankshaft though.. Is it cast or forged? If it is cast they have been known to break with as little as 400whp or so with slicks under the car...

It is a nodular cast crank, the pistons and rods are forged. I got the whole rotating assembly as a kit from eagle, and they guarantee it to 500hp.

Thats a good start! What displacement is it?

What kind of top end are you putting on it?

I believe the displacement should be 6.2, but dont quote me on that yet. CR will be 11.0:1

Edelbrock Power package-
•Edelbrock 64cc Aluminum E-tec heads, 170cc int, 70cc exh, assembled with Edelbrock hardware
•Edelbrock Hydraulic roller cam- Lift .539 int./.548 exh., Duration 296 int./300 exh.
•Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap intake
•Crane Cam Gold race extruded 1.5 roller rocker arms
•Edelbrock Rollin' Thunder Hydraulic lifters
•Edelbrock Hardened Pushrods
•Edelbrock Performer 750cfm
•Edelbrock 110gph fuel pump

I dont know if you are familiar with the Etec heads or not. They are fairly new. Edelbrock took the design of the popular GM Vortec heads, copied all the good designs from it and improved areas that werent ideal from the factory. Plus they made them aluminum rather than cast.

Heres my complete build thread with pictures of the car and parts...

Sounds like it will be a pretty stout set-up! Are you going to get it dynoed or take it down the 1/4 mile when you finish it up?

I've got a decent 383 build up in my truck.. but.. it's a truck..LOL

•Dart 64cc Iron Eagle heads, 2.05 int /1.6 ext valves
•Comp 280 Magnum Hydraulic roller cam- Lift .525 int./.525 exh., Duration 280
•Weiand Team G Single Plane Intake (one tall son of a gun..lol)
•Comp 1.5 roller rocker arms
•Comp Roller lifters
•Comp .100 over Pushrods
•Holley 750cfm

Bottom end

• Eagle Crank (forged)
• Eagle SIR Rods
• Wiseco Forged Pistons

untuned with 11.5 AFR and only like 24-26* it made 360whp and 399wtrq. with a shitty distributer cutting out at 5500+

I tuned it to 12.8 AFR and 32* timing after i broke it in but never went back to the dyno, but i garentee i picked up 40hp and 50trq

edelbrock claims 460/460 with that package on a ZZ4 which is only 9:1 comp. you should be looking at close to 500/500 crank!!!

Thanks man, sounds like you have a sweet setup there too. Yah, I will most likely dyno the motor, then also dyno the car. I will most definitely be taking this to the track on the weekends.

I just ordered some more parts today including:

Edelbrock Rollin' Thunder hydraulic lifters

Crane Cams Gold Race Extruded 1.5 full roller rockers

Edelbrock Magnum heat treated pushrods

Moroso 7qt oil pan/pump/and pick up

Thats why Im not overbuilding my balt, just keeping it a fairly aggressive DD. The Corvette has always been my project, and I did have a truck as a DD (a 2003 Avalanche Z71), but gas got to be too much so I sold it and got the SS/TC.

If you deck the block, keep in mind your compression will rise even more. Mine is cranky sometimes if you get less than ideal 93 octane.

True. Im just going to ask him and see what he thinks. Im sure if it was necessary he will do it. This guy is incredible. He is in his early 70s, and has been doing machine work since he was 8 in his grandfather's shop. Then he went to MIT and worked at Polaroid as an engineer...he's seriously a genius lol.

Since it's already assembled, i'm going to say they don't plan to deck it. It doesn't matter if the surface is pitted so long as it's not on a critical area of the gasket sealing surface.

Sounds good. I cant wait to get this back in the car and on the road. However, once its done I still need to build a 700r4 and figure out what to do with my aluminum differential to keep it from blowing up lol.
