explain this reign..usually on all my pictures I never use the flash and leave my camera on auto with white balanace while shooting in RAW format does this lead to the best picture? I figure why fool with the white balance when you can change it in PS.

If you edit the RAW then WB doesn’t really matter because it can be changed. But the goal is, at least in a professional capacity is to have the best image straight out of the camera, because post processing takes time, and time is money. Yea it might take you 10min to set a WB, but if your shooting in the same light, you don't have to manually edit 50-300 pics in PS to correct the WB later.

I have a question though? If you change the WB in the camera to another setting than Auto will it actually be imprinted on the file or does it mater in RAW? I believe next time I do shoots I am going to do the RAW+jpeg file saving.

If you shoot RAW+JPEG it will save the WB info to the JPEG, which cant be changed. but the RAW file could be adjusted from "As Shot" to a different setting.

That would probably be my best bet right there...so if the jpeg didn't have that good of a WB i could revert back to the RAW and fix from there. Spectral do you use the flash on the camera much at all? I never have to be honest.

Haha yes whenever I first got my camera I loved how the flash popped up pretty much amazed me...but I hate it anymore...don't even have to worry about it anymore at all since I shoot in manual mode.

Yea, Nikon flashes are actually pretty decent. ( you didn't hear that from me)

If you want a down and dirty, inexpensive off camera flash, check out:
http://www.mpex.com/page.htm?PG=Strobist%20Kits

You will need the Starving Student No PC Kit (SN1), or the Starving Student Wireless Kit (SW1) for the D40(x)

Off Camera flash is a bit advanced tho; you really have to understand metering, and equivalent exposures; along with knowing your shutter speed, aperture, and ISO scale from memory.

See I love nature photography love the wide angle shots want a 12mm...but they are $600..so I may just go with what you got for car photography which I love as well...$300 right now is more in my price range..maybe later on I can see spending that much money...later whenver I get another body and yes I'm going to say this but my next body will most likely be a canon....

Question spectral whenever you shoot in RAW does your pictures tend to have a bluish tint to them..mine tend to. WB way off haha.
