2007 Cobalt 2.2 with skip code..low compression on #1

68k mile car..check engine light is on,so won't pass state inspection.Car starts and runs fine..slight shake at idle. On road, pulls fine..will spin tires from a stop. NO hint of a skip while driving, BUT at idle, when cold it will toss the skip code and flash the check engine light. Compression test shows 125psi cyl #1,all others 200psi. Skip code is for cyl #1. New plugs, new coil. No difference. Do these 2.2s have valve issues or head cracks on the valve seats? I could pull the head, but I can get a used motor for less than it will cost to replace the head..so that is how I am leaning. Does anyone know what the issues are on these 2.2s that die at such a low mileage due to low compression? Glad I have an LSJ in my Atom..

It could be the rings.

I found number 2 cyl rings in my intake manifold, 125psi on that cylinder. Car runs and drives fine.

I am wondering if I should keep the motor I remove from the car..is the 2.2L block the same as the LSJ or the 2.4L? I know the LSJ has piston oil squirters, but if I were building a performance engine,I would not care about that feature. If the Ecotec blocks are all the same, maybe I could use the core as a 2.4L build project. Hmm…I do have a spare LSJ head as well..

^ Good to know. Is the 2.4 block the same as well, just bigger diameter liners/sleeves? I do have the tool to remove/install new liners..and have done it with success in the past..but only on an LSJ.

Is the crank trigger wheel the same on the 2.2,2.4 and 2.0 engines?

Nope. Lsj is different from all the others. It has a different orientation. Zzp may be able to fix that for you though depending on what you wanna do.
