3rd Gear Synchro

I've noticed recently when I downshift form 4th to 3rd it will grind right before it goes in. I know I'm pressing the clutch in all the way. It does not do it all the time, but there is not specific range that it does it in either. Sometimes I can be doing 40 and downshift and it will grind and sometimes not, and the same thing at other speeds.

The things I really want to know are:
1. How do I know if it is a synchro or not for sure?
2. How hard are they to replace, if the even can be replaced?
3. Where can I buy them?
4. Rough cost of the parts?

Edit: I did some google searching NDS Hven't found very much on on cobalt synchronizers. The most I found was when someone ***** a synchro, they just change the transmission. I was hoping it was going to be like my buddys RSX and replace the synchro and call it a day. He was also told about GM Synchromesh. His dealer told that if he used GM Synchromesh or BG synchromesh, that it may eliminate the grinding. Is this possible with our cars?

Its probably the synchro. Check your linkage under your cup holder and on the back of the trans. If everything feels right then its prob synchro. My 5th gear synchro went. I called advanced auto and Autozone. They don't sell them. You ask chevy and they'll tell you they'll look into it and never call back and tranny shops ask between 1100-1500

Syncros are inside the transmition.

If you dont want your transmition changed, youll have to take it to a transmition shop if they do internals on it.

They can be changed under powertrain warranty. I just did that last week. They changed 3rd and 4th gear synchro, as well as 3rd gear. Cost nada!
