air bag light on HELP
air bag light on HELP
For quite some time my air bag light has been on, and stays on. I dont know why..i checked the fuse box and nothing seems to be wrong. Any other ideas?
I don't know if you've checked the wiring under your seat as was stated; but at work I see a lot of cars with this issue and it is usually the air bag module (I'm assuming its the airbag light in the instrument cluster). I work at a Nissan dealership and prices run from about $300 to about $800 so I don't really know what GM will want to charge you. Good luck.
I had a similar issue. I took it to the dealer and they checked the system, recalibrated the passenger seat sensor, and cleared the code. Not that much longer it came back again. It would randomly come on, sometimes after already driving for a while. It also seemed to be tied to movement of the passenger seatbelt.
Upon inspection, the dealer found that it was due to some chaffing/shorting of the wiring going to the seat belt pretensioner, causing an air bag system fault. Due to it all being one unit, the seat belt assembly had to be replaced.

I hope so too, I would look into what Stamina mentioned and maybe just tape off the places that rubbing, but I wish you good luck.
Bulletin No.: 09-09-40-003A
Date: July 26, 2010
Subject: SIR/Airbag Light Illuminated, DTC B0081 and Passenger Presence System (PPS) Code 23 Stored (Replace Passenger Seat Belt Retractor and Re-Route Wire Harness)
Models:
2006-2008 Chevrolet Cobalt Coupe
2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Coupe
2006 Pontiac Pursuit Coupe (Canada Only)
2007-2010 Pontiac G5 Coupe Supercede:
This bulletin is being revised to update the model years. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 09-09-40-003 (Section 09 - Restraints).
Condition
Some customers may comment that the SIR light is illuminated. Upon investigation, the technician may find the following SDM code stored:
DTC B0081 71: Passenger Presence System Invalid Serial Data Received With Passenger Presence System (PPS) Flash Code of DTC 023
Cause
The wire on the Belt Tension Sensor (BTS), that is part of the retractor assembly, may become open or acquire a ground near the sensor. If the BTS is rotated toward the rear of the vehicle, added stress is applied to the wire bundle that may cause an open or a ground path. The two photos below illustrate the possible effects on the wiring. Each photo indicates the area to investigate at the arrow labeled (1).

I eventually figured it out that movement of the passenger seatbelt near where the bottom of it connects to the car would cause the error to occur.
If it's only an issue of if the airbag arms/disarms when the passenger sits in the seat, then that's a seat sensor issue, such as a bad sensor or it needing recalibration.
replaced the pre tensioner on my passenger side seat belt as well as having to trim the plastic on the seatbelt to allow for the wiring harness to have room without hitting it. You need to pull the code first
yupp, such a common issue, mine tripped when i put some heavy groceries from costco in the rear floor area, thus pulling the wires (tsb posted above) which are too short in length.
It's definitely the Passenger Presence Sensor.... Dealership wanted $750 to fix it...
My suggestion - Go to a junk yard and find a NON-WRECKED Cobalt (LS, LT, SS) and buy the entire passenger seat. You can have the dealership swap the parts for a lot cheaper than the $750 they want for a new one.
That's if your warranty has expired.

Yeah, it only occurs when somebody sits in the seat. After 15 seconds of somebody sitting down, it throws the code and turns the passenger light off. I guess i'll be searching for a new sensor.
I just got off the phone with the dealer and he said that my car has the "Major Guard" warranty, which I purchased when I bought the car. I don't specifically remember purchasing that, but if I did, props to me. Anyhow, has anybody heard of this before? Has anybody ever had experience with it covering any work done to their car? Also, are any of the airbag sensors covered under this warranty? They said it would be good until 100k or 2014, since my car is a 2009.

My 2010 cobalt has been in front end collision which caused my wheel airbag to deploy along with both front seat-belts, these past 2 weeks I've replaced the bag, replaced both seat-belts and used a scan tool to clear the codes (19 codes) and the thing is they all come up status: passed/ passed history but for some reason the dashboard SIR light is still on. I've checked for any loose plugs under the seats and all looks fine to me. Then I went digging on the web and thought it was my clock spring which I'm reusing but I've pulled it out and checked the resistance on them (airbag wire plugs) using a multimeter and concluded that they're fine. So now I'm here asking you guys for any advice that you could share about where I could look or replace in order to make the SIR light go away, I was thinking about replacing the ECU module but since I'm clearing the codes with the MD802 scanner it should be cleared and good to go. I've attached the video with the scanner if you wanna look at it, Thanks in advance.

I am going to refer you to my thread for the same exact thing. there is also another link for some pictures of where the guy pulled up the carpet to the connector located behind the B pillar. I posted a couple of part numbers and such further down.
