air pocket in coolant system??

air pocket in coolant system??

Ok so im hanging out at the regal with some friends. We all get out and I let my car running for about 20 min. Well this girl goes, whats wrong with your car and I'm like OHHHHHH SH***************!!!!!! Well it was steaming from the driver side underneath the hood by the surge tank. I look down and coolant is all over the ground. Well I called roadside assistance and had them tow it up to the dealership. Went all night trying to figure out what exactly could be wrong. I called the dealership today and they said they found no leaks and the only possibility is that it could be an air pocket. It only has 972 miles on it and I've only had it for a week. He said it could have came from the factory like that. Does anybody know if this is possible or what?? If not what could be the problem??

Question ,Were the rad fans running ?If they were not running I would say thats the problem.
Thermostate stuck ?Doesnt mater if its new.

i didnt pay attention to the fans or nothing. all i know is that it was spurging out of the hood. wouldnt the dealership be able to test to see if the thermostat stuck or something??

They would have to remove it ,at their prices they would just swap it out.
Hey the capfor the tank wasnt just loose or something ?
I would keep an eye on the temp gauge and make sure the fans come on.
You can make them come on by turning on the air con Im pretty sure.(defrost )

aight well i think imma be getting it back today so ill check it out. say if i end up blowing a head gasket cause it overheats. would they have to fix the engine for free under warranty or what???

Yes ,The car should be able to sit there all day and Idlein 100 deg heat with out over heating.
But the fans have to come on,and I think if the thermostate sticks closed they wont until its to late.

aight thanks but yeah i didnt get nothing in my pms. also i talked to the service guy about the possibility of the thermostat sticking and he said it wasnt it cause it would have thrown a code. he said they checked to see if it threw any codes and it didnt.

i still didnt get it. but check this out so they said my car is good to drive right. well i pick it up and start driving and the low coolant light came on as soon as i turned the car on. i figured they just didnt reset it or delete the code. well i pull up to a stop light, sit there for about 5 min and my coolant temp gets up to 200 degrees. so i turn my heater on thinking imma overheat again. when i pulled off and started driving it was fine with the heater off and stayed around low to mid 180s. so i pull over and stop by a car wash and see whats wrong. i let the car idle again and pop the hood. the temp got up to 219 degrees and the fans still didnt kick in. i was like screw this and blasted the heater on and pulled off to cool the engine down again. i told my dad what happened and he was like its because u put a higher flowing filter in the airbox. i did the airbox mod and i was like "nah dad people do it all the time on these forums." he was like but you dont know what the computers on these newers cars are like. what you think, i know it cant be the filter. i know when i did the airbox mod, i never disconnected my battery and reseted it. i forgot to do that. what do you think could be the problem though?? imma take it up there again this monday when they are open.

at your dad. While sitting in traffic my car consistently hovers around 200 degrees. And while I drive, I am usually around 185. You will probably need to add some coolant because I would bet the dealership didn't. If I remember right, the fans are set to kick in at 225. It has been a while since I looked at a stock tune but I think it is right around there.

dang 225??? holy crap thats freaking high. aight well i think i got some 50/50 antifreeze mix in the garage thats still full. im still trying to figure out why it overheated the other day. yeah i told my dad that if anything me putting a higher flowing filter on there just made it run cooler. lol ohh well

The coolant was dripping out? Did you by chance look for a leak anywhere? And no a coolant leak will not be caused by an airbox mod. Your dad probably just doesn't want you modding your car.

i had it towed up to the chevy dealer and they did a pressure test on it. they said they found no leaks, absolutely nothing.

On a SS-sc ,223 F for low speed 230 F for high speed.

huh? at speed you should be seeing between 180 and 190 F. If you're seeing 230 then there is something blocking your airflow.

I think he is talking about fan speed. As in low fans come on at 223 and high at 230. Thanks for the info, I didn't have a stock tune to pull from.

cruising around i see 180s. when i get to a stop light, that is when it jumps up to like 220 if i sit there for too long. i just didnt think that was normal. why do they have it set at so high though??

IIRC correctly from thermodynamics engines run more efficiently when theres a greater temperature differential between the engine and outside air....but I could be incredibly wrong there. haha.

The fans won't turn on to cool the radiators until 192 degrees and even then they are only like 6% it's not until like 240 when the fully kick on to 100%.

Believe it or not if you turn on the AC that should help cool things down, as the AC causes the fan's to activate.

You are very correct actually, its called a Carnot cycle. Hitting 220 is really nothing to worry about when your sitting still, now if you start to get on it and hit some WOT when its that high you'll run into knock.

It doesnt seem like your running hot, its just seems like your cooling system has a glitch like mentioned before such as an electrical/sensor problem or a thermostat etc.....
