Another Mystery Noise Thread
So my car has this wonderful noise, and Im wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what it might be... Car is a 2006 SS/SC. And here's the info.
Noise happens with stock wheels/tires and winter wheels and tires ( so im guessing not the tires)
Noise is like a vibration/humming. The best thing i can describe it as, is like a small propeller airplain type noise. Noise starts around 30mph, and gets louder up to 50-60mph. Give or take, 50 seems to be the loudest point, and it gets a little bit quieter if I go faster, gets lower when I slow down.
I've changed the front and rear brakes/rotors, the noise was before and after.
I've tried to see if the noise goes away with either a left or right turn , and it seems to be pretty much constant.
The noise happens if the clutch is in or out, and is not effected by shifting (seems to be solely based on the speed the car is traveling)
Im trying to decide if its a wheel bearing, or perhaps the transmission is low on fluid. I noticed that the seal/bearing on the passenger side of the transmission that the driveshaft comes out of seems to be a little bit wet. I've never seen any drops of fluid on the ground or around that area, other than the seal itself.. .
If anyone has any thoughts, ideas, experience with it, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Rats... I was really hoping for it not to be the bearing.. especially since its out of warranty.
Im 99.9% confident its not the tires, since it makes the noise with all wheels and tires, plus if i rotate them..
The dealership is going to have a field day charging me to fix it if it is infact the bearing..

It could also be the bearing on the intermediate shaft. Thus why the seal would be gone on the transmission. It also makes the sound like a wheel bearing is gone. Mine is in the shop right now getting fixed, and the seal on the passenger side of the tranny was wet too before finding out it was actually broken from the bearing being gone..
No I have a 04. I got the replacement parts for around 250 shipped.
Its easy to check just see if there is movement in the shaft near the bearing, and you can also lift the car and turn the shaft and see if it is rotatating smoothly.
From the dealer the shaft is about 700 canadian.

Incase anyone ever needs this thread...... Turns out it was the passenger side front wheel bearing/hub assembly.. Dealer tried to quote me like 325 for the part, 300 for the install. Low and behold you can get the part at OReilly's for 150.00.. Turns out though, my 06 has the 5yr 60k powertrain warranty and its covered. Im going to enjoy bringing it for them to fix for free...
bringing back a dead thread but my car is doing the same thing. the dealer tried to charge me 1000 for a supercharger. they thought the sound was the whine from the smaller pulley lol. GM ftl haha
someone help me please! (bearing case on ends of transmission where axle comes out)
I have been hearing the same noise. It gets louder when turning to the right and goes away when you turn to the left while driving. Naturally I figured it was a wheel bearing. I put the car on the lift and had some play in the passenger wheel. So I just replaced the bearing today and that wasn't it. The noise is a little quieter now but still present. Now I'm thinking its the bearings on the case of the tranny where the axle comes out. I started the car on the lift and heard exactly where it was coming from. Now what I don't know is how to even begin getting to those casings. Do I have to pull the whole dam axle out?!? I also tried to check the U-joints and when I removed the ring of the U-joint boot, I began to loose some sort of grease/fluid, so I just put it back together. Does anyone know how to help? or has done this before? and doesanyone think i have to open the tranny to press those casings out. I have the part # for them. Please please please someone respond with any info. If i cant do it I'm having a shop do it, but **** Chevy. Last time my brakes had a leak they gave me the car back with a leak still.
