Why would you need to do a radiator flush?

I basically just wanna know how to do it. I know maintenance says 5years or so but I decided to change the DEX-COOL coolant every 3 years instead.

Yeah because it's not needed.

How is it not needed? You have to eventually replace it.

Well, really, you don't.

Dexcool is like every 150,000 miles.

But anyway, there is a how-to actually, but not on this site. There is a detailed description in the LSJ Power book available on GMTunerSource.com. It's a messy job. You basically open the bottom of the radiator and it just spills out all over the floor, so you need a big drip pan.

I'm considering doing this as well; I might actually switch to regular green antifreeze.

I've mentioned this before, but some cars are tricky to get all the air burped out of the system when refilling. I'm convinced that some of the complaints people have about Dexcool are caused by too much air remaining in the system after a flush and fill.

easy way to do it is pull the upper radiator hose from the block. take a hose and spay it into the hose going into the radiator... once you see crystal clear water coming out of the engine side of the coolant hose is connected you know you have flushed the system.. reconnect the hose to the engine

now fill the over-flow tank with purple ice or water wetter (can be found at any auto store) and then fill the rest of the tank with coolant (use anything that is dexcool compatible) once the over flow is full and the big bubbles have stopped, turn the car on

let the car idle for about 15 mins while watching the over flow tank to make sure if keeps fluid in tank. the tank should be half full at all times. after you stop adding fluid and the system seems full put the cap on the tank and find the 2 radiator hoses and squeeze them to make sure there is coolant going through them and to also help try and "burp" the system and make some of the trapped air bubbles get taken out.

now put the coolant cap back on and go drive the car (highway driving/ back road driving/ stop and go traffic) maybe put a good 15 / 20 miles on it and make sure you do some 2nd gear or 3rd gear pulls to help pump the coolant trough. once done with the drive top off the fluid if it's below the half way mark and your done

i would change the coolant every 3 years.. dex-cool sucks and if you wait till 5 years or 150k miles it's going to be pudding, not fluid

You don't want to get air bubbles in it that makes it fun

its better to pre-mix your coolant
