Most people do not know this, but our vehicles are equpped with "air cabin filters." It basically filters the air that goes through the heating and AC systems. The filter sits right on top of the blower motor in a very similar manner to the way an air filter sits on a carburated motor. When the filter gets dirty and does not get replaced, it actually falls down inot the blower motor itself and usually causes very strange noises and sometimes prevents the blades from the blower motor from turning.
This is the most common problem to blower motor failure not just in our cars, but in all cars. The blower motor and filter is located behind the glovebox. Take that out and it will be right there. You should change the cabin air filter at least every 6 months or 8000 miles. Hope this helps everyone out.
Probably wouldn't hurt to make this a sticky.

Not necessarily. Even if you have the fan off, there is still a small amount of air that passes through the ac vents. The next time you are on the highway doing 60 or so, put your hand right in front of one of the vents and you will feel a little breeze coming through. Now if you almost never use your heater or your AC then it is going to take a lot longer for the cabin air filter to get dirty. Probalby 2 years or more.
Coblet Blower moters have bad bearings, or have been known to wear prematurely, there are several GM vehicles that have similar problems, GMC canyons for one..my dad has one that makes that same noises as mine did before it was replaced, he is also body tech at a GM dlr and, correct me if I am wrong, there is a TSB out for the cobalt blower motor.
Mine's making the noises too. It started out just doing it on the lowest setting, and then it progressed to all the speeds. I just turn the radio up to block it out. I took it to the dealership and they said that before they could even LOOK at it, they needed to order some new brackets or something or other, because they necessarily get broken just by taking the thing apart to look at it. But I'm taking it back in Friday for them to hopefully find out what's really wrong and fix it.
I had it replaced on my Ion redline twice and the cobalt now is starting to squeal a bit too. There is a TSB for it but is seems like they have not actually fixed the motors. They will just replace it with another shitty one.

I got my car back from the dealership tonight - my heater was making those weird noises on every setting - they replaced the whole blower motor and the problem is solved. My question is - was there actually something wrong with the blower motor or was it just noisey? In other words, would it eventually have stopped working altogether? Or was it just an annoying noise? I'm asking because it seems like a lot of people are having this problem. I can handle the noise - I usually just turn the radio up. But I can't handle my heater completely dying in the middle of winter.

Mine's an '05.
I thought it was just making a funny noise, didn't realize it would/could have actually died. If I knew that I would have taken it in much sooner - way too cold this time of year to have your heater die on ya. Mine was making noises for over a month or so and never died on me luckily.
Thanks for the info though!
