Body Control Module swap / replacment?????
Body Control Module swap / replacment?????
I have a 05 Cobalt that needs to have the body control module replaced. Heres why, the 2 small brown wires coming out of the middle of the harness ( red plug) that goes to the acc to the key switch has no power/voltage coming out of it. Not allowing the key to turn back all the way to get it out. It had blown the fuse on the fuse panel a few times and i think it finally quit all together now, the fuse is good now. i believe it was blowing fuses is because a aftermarket radio was tapped onto it and the radio was or had to much of a draw or demand of voltage. So heres the question. I can find a replacement body module for about $250.00 new or used. Will the used one need any programming? I figure the new one would. If it needs programming will I be able to install it at home a limp it to the dealer or do I really need to have the dealer install it. I am able to install myself and I know the dealer will charge me a arm and a leg. Just trying to save a few bucks. Any ideas on this matter or anyone knows how to repair it would be great, thanks in advance...
Danny
ps- luckly I have a remote start on it which allows me to get the key out by remote starting it for a second as the the remote start powers up the brown / acc wire.

If you're going to do used it HAS to match the part number exact and IIRC when I needed to replace mine I had a headache trying to find one that was compatible with the car. And I think you need to have a dealer do something with it with a Tech II, so it would not be something that you could do on your own. Not sure if that's true for a used one or not, I would assume it's mated to the previous car for security purposes. If that's the case, you will not be able to limp it to the dealer, it will be DOA until you get it programmed with a Tech II.
Don't quote me on the programming, I'm just going from memory when I was having BCM issues.

Sorry to bump an old thread but what ended happening with this? Cause an SS I'm buying does blow air (hot or cold) and the power locks don't work, and dealer said I'd need a new bcm, which I can get for 150 on eBay so he knocked 100$ off the price. Did it end up being something u could just swap in or did u need the dealer?

I swapped the bcm in my wife's 2010 LT, we had the dealer look up the exact part number that I needed and I went on Rockauto.com and ordered it for $175 ish. and it cost me $200ish more for the dealership to program the bcm. But now our remote start works!
