Brakes Rubbing After Rims?

so for christmas i got 18" rims for my cobalt ls with 15" steelies and drum brakes in the rear. right when i put the rims on every time i brake either the disks or drums (maybe both) feel like a warped rotor sensation or something. its very clunky when im braking from high speed and it sqeauks slightly at low speed (never happened before rims). first question is what is the problem and what can i do to fix it? and second is will the brakes be covered under warranty even if i have rims?

thanx in advance

Did the wheels come with hub centric rings to put on ? The rings will make sure the wheel is on the hub evenly..... if not you could get vibration from the wheel not being centered on the hub. The squeal... I have no idea why that would happen .

You need to use a torque wrench for the lug nuts(100 ft/lbs)

Uneven torque on the lugs can cause the rotors to warp after braking hard one time.

And like Rukkee said do your rims require hub centers,I think most after market rims do .

they came with hubcentric caps and i did put them on all four wheels

i torqued all lugs down to 90 ftlbs with a torque wrench

then check for wear that means take off the wheels and try to find something that doesnt look right
example chunks missing from either rim or brake calipers and if your rotors are wraped your wheels are already off so you could maybe see them

i cant see how your bigger wheels would induce brake rubbing issues on any level. are you sure its not say your wheels rubbing on the fenderliner?

what size are the tires and the offset of the wheel?

the tires are only 225/40-18 and the offset is 40

theres no way the tires are rubbing it looks like a damn 4x4.

i kno my alignment is really bad and im getting an alignment tommorow but can that be the problem?

at this point there could be many things that could be the problem, but its hard to diagnose from a chair like a thousand miles away from the problem.

but i dont think its brakes. youve just gotten rims that are now 3 inches bigger than what you had before. and since the only way i could think you would have brake rubbing issues is if you went SMALLER, which you didnt.

i would definately get the alignment check. and make sure that EVERY lug is tight. 100ft/lb. not 90.

have you recently driven through some deep water after hard braking or hit the brakes very hard and not noticed that you may have warped your rotors. its apparently very easy to warp OEM rotors on these cars.

get the alignment. and if the problem is not solved park the car, jack it up and take the rotors off and get them resurfaced for like 20 bucks. if that dont solve the problem then ill be damned. cause then id have no idea whats wrong man.

hope this helps

Front end alignment being off, or the tires not being balanced properly can cause a lot of shaking while braking. You will feel a lot of that in the steering wheel if its off in the front.

NONE OF THE ABOVE it is the little clips that hold the drums on in the rear, when u take the rims off look on the studs up against the hub,you will see exactly what im talking about.Just remove those and youll be good to go,i went through that issue with 4 sets of rims until i figured it out lol.

thanx alot for all the help!

i know i didnt warp the rotors because these are the drums and not the disks and i never braked hard after getting the rotors wet. this only happens when i brake so im sure its not the balancing.

my alignment is really really bad and im going to get that done next week.
ill definitely take the rim off and look into those clips. do u have any pictures of these said clips. ill look at them tomorrow.

thanx again for the help i really appreciate it!
