Castrol Syntec 5W50 for ss s/c

I need to change my oil tomorrow on my 2006 SS SC. I know the car ships with mobile 1 5w30 but i want to change to the 5w50 Castrol Syntec. If i do this will it void my warranty? My thinking that since the motor is high reving that the 50 would help with the heat in regards to oil break down.

Your thoughts??

Yes, if the dealer finds out that you used a different brand/weight than what is recommended, they can void your warranty.

I understand the weight, but they can't void it over brand. It says in the book as long as meets GM4718M or GM6094M one the two, it's acceptable for use.

brand shouldn't make a difference - as long as the oil you use meets the standard gm 4718 (i think thats it). a bottle of mobil 1 5w30 will have the gm standard listed on it. its either 4718 or 4719. as long as the oil you're using meets that, you shouldn't have a problem. so far, mobil 1 5w30, syntec 5w30, pennzoil platinum 5w30, and valvoline synpower 5w30 all meet the standard, and i haven't seen any conventional or "synthetic blend" oil that does. oddly enough, i'm pretty sure i've seen that mobil 1 0w30 meets it as well, the only non-5w30 i've seen that does. they claim a mileage benefit with the 0, but i'm leary about the grade difference. whatever you put in it, i'd just do what i do and keep the backs of the bottles that say that it meets the standard called out the in owner's manual, and you should be fine. (i have receipts, upcs, bottle backs for each of the bottles/filters i've put in mine. lets see them blame me for an oil related problem now)

also, i wouldn't consider a 6500 redline "high revving"

deff recommend mobile 1 5W-30. unless ur getting some crazy deal with free synthetic oil changes for life, then put it what it has written right on the oil cap

That's true, and it would be hard to prove that it was another brand. However, it says to only put Mobil 1 right on the cap, and I honestly don't see a reason to use any other brand.

I have a vendetta against Exxon/Mobil. What's amazing is a few days ago some stealership put 10W30 in some guys car, when I commented it said 5W30 right on the cap I was an idiot for not wanting anything else put in.

I have used Moblie 1 years ago and found it to burn off quite easily. I have never had any problems with Castrol Syntec plus it is approved by the warranty according to the bottlle.

Thanx to everyone for their opinions

Why would you want to put in such a heavy oil? Castrol makes synthetic in the proper weight...

(Are you sure the 5=50 is pure synthetic? I didn't know they made such a heavy syn)

I wouldn't put 5w-50 in your car. It is not a good idea. The car is designed to run with 30 weight oil not 50 weight. You are just asking for trouble by changing the weight like that, not to mention you are going to rob yourself of horsepower and fuel mileage. Unless you have a highly modified engine I would not use a racing oil in the car.

Are you sure you weren't running regular Mobil? There non-synthetic burns off like gas in an oven.

As for Castrol there synthetic oils aren't 100% like Mobil either.
