Not much anybody can help you with unless you can find out what the trouble code is.

Highly recommend you pick up a code reader from an autoparts place (like an Actron CP9125 OBD II PocketScan from Autozone - $69) . Read the directions on its' use and you can decipher any code to insure you're safe to drive if you can't get the car to a dealer for possible repairs. It also allows you to erase an intermittent code if you want to stop the CEL from reappearing due to an intermittent trouble code -- hopefully that's all you have....

Mac Tools has an extremely nice one, the size of a zippo for 59.99 I'd suggest

P0420 Catalyst System Low Efficiency
From 2006 Cobalt Service Manual page 6-1592:
1. Inspect catalytic converter for
Dents
Severe dicscoloration
Internal rattle
Restrictions
2. Inspect Exhaust for
leaks
damage
loose/missing hardware
properly torqued HO2S (2nd sensor after cat)
3. Inspect HO2S for
grounded wire
damage

Did whoever read the code clear it for you? This one can be cleared in the event that it was a one-time set. If it doesn't come back it's nothing to worry about. Fuel with a high sulpher content can cause this DTC too.

Here is an idea. Instead of the $60 or so for the reader, get an Aeroforce for around $230. You can read the codes, clear them and monitor a whackload of things going on with the car.

Even better. Get the Interceptor in this Group Buy for $200.

I would get it checked by the dealership. You may be having a cat go bad which can destroy your catback if it lets loose.

I manage a collision center in Texas and can tell you that one of two things are wrong with it.

(1) The oxygen sensor by the exhaust manifold is bad. Depending on where the impact was it could be accident related.

(2) Your catalytic converter has died. If that is the case, it is covered under warranty. All emissions components on every car sold in the United States must be covered for 100000 miles.

Hope that helps

took it to the dealer today and here is what is wrong:

Water got into the airbox which caused the MAF to foul, Spark plugs are shot, Cat is shot, and muffler is shot...

i get it back tomorrow

at least it is all cover by gm warenty..

btw gm put out a bulletin about this so if your exhaust is rattlein and your car feels doggy..take it there asap

Rain Water? Is your airbox all stock? Mine has drain holes in the bottom of it to prevent water from collecting -- was your's all stopped up?
