Exclamation "Check gas cap" then car is dead!

Hi Everyone.

So I'm driving to work the other morning, and I my 2006 LT starts getting a little shaky. I don't really think anything of it until a "check gas cap" message appears. So I'm like, "Ok what the hell is this". I get out of my car and find that the gas cap was not screwed in all the way, and there is gasoline running down the side of my car. I put the gas cap back on, and I try to restart the car. It sputters, and then it's completely dead. I can't get it started again. I get a tow truck and take it to the dealer. It's in the shop for six days before anyone can tell me what's wrong with it. The guy said that it was water in the tank, so the gas station put bad gas in my car, and it's not covered under warranty because of this. So today I went in, paid $650 to get it back (they had to drop the tank, replace some ****, blah blah blah), and began to drive away. They saved a sample of gas for me in a water bottle and it was about 80% gas and 20% of a lighter-colored fluid on top of that the mechanic claimed was water. My check engine light is still friggin on, and the gas sensor is broken (it wasn't broken when I brought it in). I get it home, and I attempt to start it back up again, and it's dead. Back to the shop.

I am so pissed about this. Would water in the gas tank do all of this, or do they not want to cover my car and blame it on the gas station? What other possibilities could there be?

Thanks for your help.

The gas company should pay

Get a written statement from the dealer, and keep a picture of the bottle and hope you have a receipt for the gas and then get a hold of the gas company unless its a independent,Maybe approach the gas station owner first unless he is shady looking and they should come good for the repairs as far as I'm concerned.

at the dealer i work at we had an 08 jeep patriot towed in no start after getting gas, removed fuel line, nothing came out, let it sit inside for 3 hrs, got gas out of the line, put it in snapple bottle, 95% was water. droped tank, dumped gas, got 10 gal of new gas, replaced sparkplugs and ran fine.
YES, Water in gas will cause no start/stall.

ya small amounts of water won't but the amounts that you guys are talking about will definetly cause a no start. and ya i would take all the info you have back to the gas station and have them reimburse you for the charges.

if the car still has problems and isnt fixed, dont aproach the gas station till the car is back running again. it may not actualy be their fault, their may be something else wrong with the car that caused this, and it could be a warrenty thing. if whatever it was costs you more money, you will want to make sure you have bills for that before you go after anything.
