Cleaning your headliner?

Just curious if anyone has any tips on how to go about cleaning the headliner in our cars? I noticed the other day some dirt has accumulated in the rear half of my headliner (due to the sunroof being open, used to live on a dirt road, rear passengers wearing dirty hats, etc etc). Anywho, I tried cleaning it with a damp paper towel earlier....and all it did was smear it around and embed it deeper into the headliner it seems.....making it worse, not better. I tried some turtle wax oxy upholstery cleaner, and that only seems to partially make it better. Im gonna go try it again here in like 30 min before it gets dark though. Any advice?

Still un-effective. Got some of it out, but theres still some blotches that are slightly darker from the wet rag spreading it around.

brake cleaner eh? My stains are just light dirt that got smeared in and spread around. Think the brake cleaner would work?

First use a wet/dry vac since the dirt usually will suck off the surface easier dry instead of spreading it around after making it damp. Then, I usually use Blue Coral Upholstry (<sp?) cleaner. Then I follow suit with a wet/dry vac to again suck the crap out of the headliner.

Yeah that was for future reference. To get out what you have going on now, ensure the vacuum hose or adapter piece is nice a clean. Then, spray on the Turtle Wax cleaner of Blue Coral and let it sit for a moment. Then vacuum it out/off being gentle trying not to press to hard into the headliner. Once it's fairly dry, follow through with a good vaccum and viola! Repeat as necessary. The steam cleaner you mentioned earlier will do the trick as well if you have access to one.
