Clutch - Slipping?

Hey guys, I think my clutch is slipping or messed up. Tell me what you guys think. In everyday casual driving, the car drives fine. But whenever you try to give it some power, do the hard shift from 1st to second... it like bogs out as if is riding the clutch out. That’s why I think it’s slipping. I cant get it to chirp it going into second, and have a hard time breaking them loose in first from the good 10 mph roll.

What do you guys think is wrong?

Dunno, so I will open up a new can of worms. I have 2000 miles on my car, since day 1 I have noticed a problem with my car.

Basically when you floor it sometimes (very rare) you will be gaining power from 2000 to 3000 to 4000 then it will like bog you feel a wierd jerk if you left off the power and gun it again its not here, I dont know really how to explain it. Its occurred maybe 3 times. I figure theres no sense going to my dealer and complaing about something that happens so rare. any idea what it is?

If you are trying to and have been trying to "Chirp" into second, then you have noone to blame for the clutch failing but you.

If you hammer down in third and the engine speeds up faster than the car does, then you might have some clutch slippage.

It's hard to determine in the start of clutch weakness but it will become more apparent with time.

This is a very common problem. I slip from first to second as well. The engine revs but the car goes nowhere and sometimes I can smell clutch burn. I just think this GM clutch sucks bigtime ass!! Anyway, about the bogging and jerking, I am 100% convinced that this is a computer problem which explains why some cars do and some cars don't bog. For example, my buddy and I both have the Fujita intakes and we both get CEL's often, however, his car drives normal when the CEL is on and mine drives like crap (won't boost above 40 KPA and won't pass 4000 RPM in 3rd gear). It's only a matter of time before GM gets enough complaints to issue a TSB to reflash our computers. Also, my gas mileage has been crappy since Day 1. I can't seem to get more than 375 km (234 miles) to a tank, even when I baby it. I'm taking the car in tomorrow to see what these issues are. Even though my CEL has been off for a few days now, the car still bogs in 1st and 2nd gears.

I C, I usually average about 21.1 MPG... I do drive very spirited so I assume thats normal. I averaged about the same in my SE-R auto.

Ive noticed a big difference with the heat on / off. Heat on Even cruising at 55 in 5th I dont get over 22. as soon as I shut the heat off it can go to 25+ easily.

I think the lowest Ive averaged on a tank was 19.

Yeah, I don't think the clutches are good at all. I've heard that it only holds like 200lbs of tourque so it's pretty much maxed out (I only heard this, it's probably not true, maybe 201 lbs lol jk) People are going to be pissed when they get the stage 2 upgrade from GM, or even the stage 1, and their clutches go because of the higher tourqe and gm won't warranty the clutch. (so gay of gm) That's why after I get my stage 2 from GM, I'm going to see how long the clutch lasts. After that I'm going with a stage 2 clutch. The stage 2 clutch listed on Gravana better hold or i'll be out of almost 1000 bux (with installation that is)

instead of driving with the ac on and turned to the heat side, try running with just the vent on set to the heat side in humid cold conditions this might cause the car to fog up though so if that happens turn on the ac heat side

i drive pretty casual in my daily drive but I have gone on a few spirited runs and to the track ... I dont recall ever riding the clutch to make it slip ... I suppose you guys need to watch how your driving a bit more cus it seems like you may be shifting incorrectly causing unintentional wear on the clutch

Hmmm, Warrenty Issue? I have 3,750 miles on the car. WTF? Thinking about giving the dealership a call. They never did update me on the passenger door insert problem. Looks like they will have another thing to fix / replace.

With just that many miles, one would think you were just out of a proper break in period. Perhaps you improperly broke it in with all your qtr mile runs?

None the less, if it happens regularly, warranty the bitch... chevy will make it right.

Also, if the Grand Am Cup Cobalts are really running the factory clutches with Stage 2+'s, I'm sure something else has to be going on to make these clutches slip!?

Does the engine rev faster then normal when it bogs ?

Typically if you had a slipping clutch.... did a hard 1-2 shift and it slipped... the engine would rev up way high (maybe even bounce off the limiter if you didnt catch it fast enough) and the car wouldnt go anywhere.... basically the engines moving but the trans is not....

The bogging seems to be pretty normal with these car... its got to be something in the PCM the way its delivery fuel or whatever when the RPMs change so quickly. Ive found if you slip the clutch just a little imbetween the 1-2 shift it doesnt bog.....The Psi Fi kit remedied this for me as well...

Doesn't sound like clutch slippage to me. Sounds like something in the ECU regarding ignition and fuel advance. If it is the clutch though, it will get worse, so keep an eye on it.

I hope it is not the clutch for your sake, because there is no way GM will swap out a clutch that has less than 4K on it.

Its definetaly the Clutch. And its gotten worse already... "WTF" Its really really bad in 1st gear, so-so in second and once your going its fine. The clutch used to have the real "grabby" feeling to it, now it like doesnt hardly grab at all.

I'll talk to the guy down the street that works for the dealership.

We may be making a defective part claim.. dunno. I'll see what they say and tell you all how it works out.

i dont think its the car. I used to do the same thing when i first started driving a standard. I noticed i was holding the clutch to where it was slipping letting the car move some and the engine rev too. pretty much ridding and burning the clutch. Then i would let out the clutch to fast and the car would bog from like it was almost stalling out. I got this from teaching myself how to drive a manual on the track. so my feet wouldnt work together to well at low speeds. this not an attack on your skills, just advice.

oh and your warranty doesnt cover consumable goods. ie: clutch, brake pads, or tire wear.

Actually a clutch is covered in your powertrain warranty. I've had one's replaced under warranty before!

depends if your dealer is nice enough to do it for you, but they do not have to, because it is considered a wearable item.

especially with all this news about gm cutting costs, expect warranty repairs to be harder to get in the future

i had the same problem a while ago clutch was fine it was only slipping when you try to chirp and once it you let off the gas and it stops slipping then get on it again the clutch is fine , i took it to the dealer and they coudnt replicate the problem, well to make a long story short it fixed it self and is now perfectly fine and i have 12000 miles , i had the problem from right out of the showroom so you cant blam this problem on the owner of the car, someone somewhere burned the clutch a little and put a slight glaze on the face, it will eventually go away
