Cooling System

I have an LSJ in my Exocar (much like an arial Atom); My question is around the coolant surge tank on the LSJ; Should it an open or pressurized system?

What are the implications of running it open?

The mechanic that dropped the engine into the car installed the collant tank with the blue connection "open" to drain if it ever got that full so currently not running pressurized.

Currently the car has only run v short runs barely getting to temp but want to make sure I dont have an issue.

Thanks

does that blue hose route directly into the tank, or does it go to the cap area? your cooling system needs to be pressurized, if its not you will end up boiling the coolant and having all sorts of issues.

something that scares me in that pic is the fuel lines. AN push lock fittings should not be used with standard fuel hose (even if it is fuel injection rated fuel hose), push lock hose should be used with the same companies pushlock hose. also,m worm gear clamps should never be used on a high pressure fuel hose, if you must use a hose clamp, get an efi hose clamp. just an fyi, would hate to see a project burnt up or people hurt cause of something like that.

Thank you for the advice - first time going through a project like this and relied heavily on the mechanic to do things right.

Will jump on replacing the clamps...

Re the blue hose it doesn't connect to anything at the moment which was why I was worried. I figured it should be a pressurized system.

what he means is that coolant tanks usually have a "dump tube" that connects to the cap area above where it seals off the main tank. that way the air/coolant can vent out the tube if/when the pressure exceeds the ~15psi cap rating and the valve pops.

The question is whether the blue hose attaches to the main volume of the tank, or into its own volume at the cap.

lmao I had a hard time workinf this, so I hope it makes sense

Which blue hose? Looks like the one on the left is the vent tube and should be open. The right side should be pressurized, it is the coolant return to the reservoir. At least that's what it appears to be from what I see.

The blue tube sadly does not appear to be a vent tube... I removed the cap had a look and the release spring is just inside the cap.

The blue pipe is open to the body of the tank and hence it's not pressurized at all

I removed the cap and can just blow through the tube into the tank.
