Crack in the oil pan!

So I noticed that my car was leaking a little bit of oil this morning. So I looked underneath and saw what looks like a stress fracture on the oil pan near the bolt. I am taking it in to the dealership tomorrow and it should be under warranty. Has anyone else had a similar problem with their oil pans?

It doesn't make sense to me. I have only had the car since the end of June. And I haven't hit anything or jacked the car up by the oil pan like someone else on here did

yeah first time I have seen this as well.. Do you do the oil changes yourself or take it somewhere? It sounds like the drain plug was put in too tight. I believe the drain plug only needs to be torqued to like 10 lbs or so.

I haven't had to change it yet. Haven't even put 3,000 miles on it since I bought it. I bet the dealership tightened the drain plug too much. Sucks for them now they can fix it!

Nope! I am going to stick with the drain plug being to tight theory! It makes a lot of sense with the location of the fracture being right behind where the plug goes into the pan.

The pan on my GF's 2005 base had a small crack in it. But it was something impacting the oil pan that caused it.

Myself and one of the techs at work drained the pan, polished up the impact area and applied a few layers of JB weld.

It's been over a year and still holding.

that's why you use a washer/gasket between the bolt and the pan when you tighten it up...

The stock plug already has a gasket in it so I wouldn't recommend using another washer or you run the risk of leaking oil.

If you only put 3,000 miles on the car and there is a crack in the pan it sounds like a factory default, have the dealership replace the pan. Don't let them put any weld or anything on it - make them replace it. It is easy to replace the pan, $150 in parts and it literally takes 15 minutes to pull it off and replace it and its under warranty anyways.

Mine didn't come with a gasket...

But deffinately have them replace it.... but I'm sure they'll do that anyway.

Took it in to the stealership today and they said that it looks like impact damage. Funny thing is that they admitted some of it had to of come from before I purchased the car but they still say that the warranty isn't going to cover it. Thay said that the impact looks fresh. Which is what they say when they want your money. I am getting boned, any input? Quote was like $500, which is mostly labor and my deductable is about the same so its a lose-lose situation I guess. I have been arguing with them all day and didn't get too far.

Get a junkyard pan and do it yourself? It's really not that hard to do.

Go to a different dealership. When they put it up, ask to go under there and look at it w/ the tech. Don't say anything, but if they claim impact, make them show you where. Bring a camera and take pictures too...

Hmmm....sounds fishy to me. As was said....take it to another dealership and have them look at it.
