Door won't latch when being shut

This happens completely randomly, there is no pattern to it. No there is no water in there. I'll get out of the car, go to shut the door and it will bounce back open. Any idea? Is this a common problem with the latches? I've heard of this happening on multiple occasions but I never saw a solution.

If it pops out, I usually hit the door lock, then hit the unlock and close the door. It must move something in the latch because it seems to work when I do that

Yep my door does this too. Just up and down with the lock and you should be good to go!

That actually worked! I read this when you guys posted and it happened when I got to work, and this "fixed" it. Does it make a "louder than normal" pop when you guys do this?

Is there any permanent fix?

Dunno about a fix but it happens to me very seldomly at random times. I haven't bothered looking for a permanent fix

When the lock went down or came back up did the *pop* noise seem louder than normal? Like it was un-sticking something?

Mine started doing this recently. I use the lock unlock method. And a couple times I can't open the drivers side door from inside. So I crawl out the passenger side, and it opens from the outside. I dunno. Stupid Cobalt....

most of these doors wont shut/open issues can be fixed by cleaning out the latch with a generous amount of wd-40 and then some white lithium graese to grease it back up

Just started with the back drivers side door not latching. WD40 and grease didn't cut it so I started looking at other fixes. No power locks, no power windows so few options.

Here's my fix. Sat in the back seat, pulled on the handle, pushed down the lock and pulled it back up (with the handle still pulled on), released the handle and cycled the lock again. Fixed.

I expect this will happen again so I went over the steps with my wife as it's her car. Hopefully it works for her if (and when) it go wacky again.

You have to replace the door lock actuator, had to do it in mine 2 weeks ago. Went to the local convenience store and the door decided to just keep bouncing off the hinge. Was able to get it to shut but then I couldnt get the thing to open again. lol Wound up removing the actuator, taping the door shut until i could get the replacement, good as new again. It's a typical GM issue on many car's, my buddys GTO does it all the time.
