Eating starters. Why?

Car: Cobalst SS/SC 2007

Installed before problem: OTTP stage 2 kit/ottp heat exchanger/dual pass endplate/hpt tune.

Problem Description: We put the new tune in and tried to crank it. It sounded normal but would not turn over. After a couple tried we heard a horrid metal on metal grind. The starter was shattered. We replaced the starter and tried again. Exact same thing happened.

Question: What could be shattering the starter?

What exactly is breaking off the starter? Have a picture of your starter by chance? If its the housing then its not secured properly.
This happened just after your tune?

Flash back to stock, repeat. Starts don't magically break by themselves on a 2.0 liter engine. If you flash a new tune and suddenly it won't crank the tune is at fault, probably severe pre ignition making the starter fight the engine or backlashing the motor, which ruins gear drive starters.
