emergency brake not working, help please

So i park on a hill and put my cars emergency brake on and it still rolls back, now i can feel there is no tension until im almost all the way to the end of the pull on the brake. should i just tighten my cable or does anyone think that i broke the spring? thanks for any input.

just take off the centre console piece behind the e-brake..its just held in with clips (the cupholder part in the back) if u think ur gonna break it don't worry it pops right out once in get it a little lose and also they are like indestructable lol see if the little metal piece that holds the cable came off..if it did its a really simple fix just simply put the cable back on and try it again

^^^What they said. mine went back together too smoothly though, I ended up bending the bracket afterwards so it would be more secure

I had this same problem, and it turned out that one of the two e-brake cables had come out of the metal clip. I just popped it back in secured it a little better, and it's been good ever since.

Basically you have one cable coming from the brake lever back to the metal clip/bracket. And then two more cables going back towards the rear (one for each rear brake) With mine one of the rear cables had come loose, so no matter how hard I pulled the lever up it wouldn't fully engage the brakes

it's possible, but I would check the linkage inside your car (center console under the rear cupholders) first, and make sure that nothing came loose there first. How does your ebrake lever feel when you pull it up, you should have resistance almost immediately, and and only need to pull it up a few inches for it to fully engage. If it comes up higher than that and doesn't feel like your pulling against resistance than it may have just come loose like we said.

Yupp, "there's your problem" lol. Thanks for posting the pic, now everyone else can see what we are talking about.

Both of your cables were out, so you had ZERO e-brake happenin, lol. With mine only one was out, so I was only slightly engaging one of the rear brakes. With yours you were just pullin a lever attached to nothin.

I used a set of pliers or channel-locks (it's been a while can't remember exactly) to close up the openings once I got my cables back in. That way I knew they wouldn't pop back out on me again later down the road

okay so i did that and the cables werent out, but the bolt that tightens the ebrake cable attatched to the two cables was loose so i tightened it and now my rear brakes are pratically peremently on. I put it in neutral on a hill and my car didnt roll back. not to mention i noticed while tightening the bolt that the two cables werent even. i dont know if they need to be even but thought id mention that. i wish i had a camera right now. lol

Both sides should def. be even, otherwise it would only engage one brake, or one more-so than the other.

You may want to throw the rear end of your car on some jack stands, trace the cables back and see if all is okay underneath. This will also allow you to spin each tire and see when the brake engages

Its the passenger side thats longer than the drivers side and i was thinking that same thing. ill have to take it to my job and see what i can do seeing that i have no jack stands as of the moment. would it be because i may need new brakes? but if i did i dont know why my car wouldnt roll back on a hill, or why the rear brakes are kind of locking up.

It doesn't sound like you need new brakes, as you said it wouldn't roll down hill, so the brakes are doing their job. It sounds to me like something just needs to be adjusted.

You said you tightened up the connection going to the lever. I'm guessing you overdid this part, and now one of your rear brakes is engaged, even when the lever is not pulled. I would loosen this back up, so you don't burn your brakes driving while they are engaged. For the time being, you can just park with your car in gear, so it wont roll anywhere, just don't forget that it's in gear when you start it back up lol.

I'm guessing either one of your cables needs to be adjusted at the brake itself, or may have stretched, or may not be properly seated at the rear of the car. it's hard to say without seeing it. I'm guessing it'll all make since to you once you can get underneath and see what's going on with the cables on that end.

Good luck

I had the same issue. My cable wasn't popped out, but even with the handle all the way up, the car would roll forward. All of a sudden, I tried the e-brake last week and it's working. Makes no sense to me at all, considering this isn't a complicated mechanical system. I think the calipers on these cars suck.

I'v been experiencing some problems with my ebrake as well, i popped off the piece you guys suggested and noticed that both were hooked up, but the driver side cable was quite a bit longer than the passenger side. When i pull the ebrake the driver side pulls, but it isn't untill the last or 2nd to last click on the brake that the passenger side even pulls a little, and im sure its not doing much if anything for the RR tire.

Old thread... but my parking brake doesnt work at all.... i pulled the console... found the cables were still in the bracket... and the passenger side was longer than the drivers side. I tightened the adjusting nut for the cable as tight as it would go... and it seemed that the handle felt tighter when it got all the way to the top... but no matter how hard i pull it up... i still roll with the parking brake on. Think my cable is too far stretched?

Your rear pads might be worn down to much.

Yeah i gotta check.... or it could be the levers are frozen on the rear calipers for the parking brake. Just bought this car... so i gotta find a wheel lock for the wheels to get them off lol... and then ill be able to check.

My buddy that sold me the car is in basic trainig for the army.... so i cant get in touch with him for lie another month and a half to get the wheel lock... i guess ill have to make due until then.

Just get the wheel locks removed at a Belle Tire. Will cost you like $25 OTD with new lugs.
