engine noise

I just recently purchased an 05 cobalt ss/sc and I have noticed some kind of rattling noise coming from the valve cover area of the engine. i was wondering if these 2.0 sc engines are known to be noisy or if this is something I should be concerned about.

just over 10,000 miles.. i only get it every so often, and only at idle.. its like a clicking tappet or something.. i cant figure it out. and when it does happen i head to the dealership. by the time i get there it stops and i look like an ass when trying to explain it to the grease monkey..

This can be 1 of 2 things:

1. The timing chain. Our cars can have some noisy timing chains.

2. The supercharger. Sometimes my SC will make a rattling noise on start up. After a minute or two it warms up and the noise goies away. The Eaton SC can be noisy at idle sometimes.

I wouldn't worry about it unless the noise doesn't go away, or unless the noise gets worse. If you start hearing the noise ALL the time, then there might be a problem. But for the most part I wouldn't worry about it.

The Ecotec valvetrain is VERY noisy. It is normal. It's a result of the timing chain meshing the gears. And at idle, the cams tap a bit. Perfectly normal.
