I'll bet theres not a single person on this board that hasn't hit at least 120mph. Like I said, just because your older doesn't mean you can do it and he can't. And don't even act like you have never driven that fast before. IMO, if you don't have anything HELPFUL or nice to say then why the hell post in the "problems and service" forums just to bitch at him....

As for your problem; I have no idea what it could be bro, I've had my car that fast a few times (kiss my ass) and it's never cut off... Keep asking around I guess. Hope everything works out for you...
Well I have to admit I HAVE hit 140, on a closed track, with helmet on and a certified instructor in the car. NEVER on a goddamn public road.

It's stupid for ANYONE no matter the age to go well above the speed limit on a public road, I don't care how many "madd skillz" you think you have, it's not enough to overcome physics.

Everyone gets the urge to go fast or push it here or there. The problem with teenagers is that they have their little invincibility complex that makes them not realize what happens when they lose control of a car, someone pulls out in front of them, etc. Nor do they have enough actual driving experience to know how to properly judge speed, distance, braking distance, handling limits, etc, etc, etc. THAT is what makes being 17 and owning a car like this a dangerous thing. It usually takes themselves or a close friend or relative having a close call with a serious accident to realize that driving isn't just a game, it's serious and requires a lot more skill than they'd originally thought. Unforunately if speed is involved, they usually don't get the chance to make improvements.

Sure, I knew people that went 120 when they were teenagers and I wish I could say they learned a lesson from it, but 80% of them never got the chance to. Off the top of my head - one was burned to death when they flipped their car over the overpass, three ended up in ditches, one basically got cut in half by a tree (himself, not just the car), one was decapitated, and one ended up plastered to the grill of a semi. These weren't stupid kids or bad drivers, they were just typical teenagers. Hell, the girl that was decapitated was going to be her high school's valedictorian. It's not a question of skill or smarts, its a question of judgement and self control....two things that most teenagers haven't fully developed yet.

PFT! That is SO not true! When I was his age I had an 11 second 1976 Monte Carlo that would yank the tires off the ground!

These cars are slow compaired to what I had when I was his age.

Just be careful dude is the only preaching you'll get from me. Oh and don't do it on a busy street! But then that falls under the be careful thigs doesn't it?

I agree, it is stupid for anyone to go that fast. The only point I am making is, people get on here and bitch at him like they have never ever gone fast in their cars before. Kudo's to you for having a helmit on and an instructor with you. But when you get into the subject of a teenager is where it becomes bullshit. Not every teenager thinks they are elite hardcore drivers. I am 18 and I've almost died from a car accident, and no, I wan't the driver. It was a drunk driver accident and I went through pure HELL. Before you start bitching about how bad teenagers drive you need to sit back and remember that every damn teenager isn't exactly alike. I learned from my experiences and I know exactly what a car can do. So when you sit there and say that "thats the probem with teenage drivers" you need to rephrase it to say "thats the problem with SOME teenage drivers". I hate to rant like this but it's comments like yours that **** me off..

SS Super, Ok first thing you need to remember is no matter how great a driver you think you are, your not! Please don't tell me you have the I'm indestructable mentality that so many young guys have cause that will get you trouble.

I mean look at Dale Ernhardt Sr. he THOUGHT he was a good driver. Don't ever get cocky out there man its how you get hurt.

Ok you guys NEED to dial it down a notch or two. No ones acting a dick here so stop being so defensive! We just don't want another "Lost a member" thread thats all.

Sorry I have done it many times.....(kiss my ass!) You don't buy a car like this, an SRT4, vette, camaro, or whatever to drive the 65 mph speed limit! Although I did learn my lesson after I got pulled over and clocked at 146 in a 65 in my 93 Eclipse! So yes I do speed, but I'm not stupid either! That is the difference, goin' 100 mph and swervin' in and out of lanes.... STUPID! Doing 80-90 getting to work and drivng like a sane persone.... OKAY (untill you get caught of course!)

Leave the kid alone, just because you didn't have a nice fast car at 18 don't take it out on him!

Awards

Earnhardt was named second among NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998 (ranked behind David Pearson).

Well except for us 2.2L guys, cause our gov kicks in around 106mph.

To the OP you wont catch any flak from me about doing 120, hell when I was 17 I had a 1975 Toyota pickup that barely did 90 but I kept that needle buried as close to that as possible. Its something we all do to see how far we can push ourselves and our vehicles, I still open her up on the freeways at night occasionally. Just to echo what the others have been saying, just be careful man.

Oh and I have no idea why your car shut off, possibly the key is the only thing I can figure.

What does that have to do with the fact that he's still dead? Thats what I was saying dude, I think maybe you missed my point. That even the great Dale Sr. got killed going fast.

Everyone here has gone fast at somepoint. They wouldnt have bought the SS/SC otherwise.

The thing that seems to be most common though, is that ALL teenagers think that they are the exception to the rule.

When I was 17-18, I got the same crap from everyone, and I used the argument that I was better than other drivers, and not ALL teenagers are the same.

Looking back, and this is something that can only be seen in hindsight, I was exactly like all the teenagers I was preaching about NOT being.

All teenagers have been "driving for a while", and think that they are set apart from all other teenagers.

Point is, that less than 5% of teenagers actually fit in to the category they think they do.

Edit** there is nothing that anyone here is going to say that is going to keep teens from driving fast. Just be reasonable, and use common sense.

Shut down on you, then started right back up again a little while later?

Maybe the CPS?

I can honestly say I dont go that fast in my car on the highway, but I remember hitting the governor more than a few times in my cavalier (~104mph) when I was 18 and always in a hurry. Just be careful and try to remember that being late to class is no big deal compared to getting into an accident.

Back on topic though.. as for your car shutting off.. could be that there is a glitch in the governer/chip and when it hit the perverbial wall where it shuts off the fuel maybe the engin just stalled out.......

Funny, the reason I have a Cobalt is because I needed a new car after my Cougar shut off when I was doing about 90. I never got her running again, it fried something in her electrical system.

Thank you for demonstrating the attitude I was referring to that gets teens in trouble.

If that's what you get from what I'm saying, you need to brush up on reading comprehension. Not all teenagers ARE bad drivers, but all teenage drivers have a lot more POTENTIAL to be bad drivers than older drivers. Again...even with "good" driving skills, even with better than average driving skills for a teenager - that's NOT what gets teens into trouble. It's immaturity, peer pressure, poor judgement, lack of experience, and overconfidence in their own skills that gets teenagers killed. None of my friends who were killed were dumb people or bad drivers. With one or two exceptions, I thought they were all pretty safe and never would have thought twice about hopping in the car with them. Two decided it was late and they just wanted to get home as quick as they could and wrecked. One was cruising along at maybe 5 over the speed limit and tried to pass someone before the passing lane ended, misjudged how far away the oncoming semi was and became a grill ornament. That kid had been racing karts and bikes since he was ten and had been driving since he was 13 or 14.

THAT is why people say that teenagers having cars like an SS isn't smart. You combine all the factors above with a car that's got decent power and is a magnet for "showing off" and you just REALLY upped your chances of having an accident with catastrophic results.

I always find these threads funny.

For the record, no teenager of mine will have a car that is capable of a buck twenty. I'm going to get them something that shuts off at 80.
