a/f gauge malfunctioning

i have a digital a/f gauge in my 2009 ss/tc and about two months ago it started to malfunction and im not sure what is causing it. when i first start driving, it reads fine but after usually a 1/2 to a mile of driving it goes to 20.0 for a second then 50.2 and stays around 50.2-50.3. i read that dirty o2 sensors are uncommon but i dont understand why it works initially then starts to malfunction. it seems to happen quicker under harder acceleration also, if i drive very conservatively it can work for longer. any ideas? its important for me to track my a/f ratio while i drive because i believe i have a vacuum leak somewhere

not sure of the brand, but its a very simple gauge. its rectangular in shape and has just a digital readout only. nothing fancy like a lc-1

oh i dont know then. it could be a bad sensor though, but id wait for some more feedback from others before you drop 70 bucks on a new sensor

Check the connection to the sensor first for water intrusion ,corrosion etc and apply some dielectric silicon to them for protection.
They work on such low voltage any change in resistance could affect it.

But it does sound like the sensor is buggered or contaminated with crap.Im not sure what you could clean it with or if you can at all.
Pull it out and take alook.

I have an AEM wideband and it kinda does the same thing. It will bounce back and forth between its highest and lowest reading constantly. Im thinkin bad sensor but im going to check all the connections too.

Another possibility for me anyway is the that my wideband bung is right in line with my 2nd O2 sensor about 4 inches behind it so there maybe be some "turbulence" causing it to read wrong.

I have an aem wideband gauge and for the longest time my would work then after a while of driving like 10 minutes it would just crap out and sit 14.7... eventually it just stopped working all together and sat at 14.7 all the time. I picked up a new sensor and popped it in and it works now, maybe same type of deal. sensor going bad

I just installed mine (AEM) a few days ago. And brand new right out of the box it bounces around a lot. Under normal driving/cruising it constantly bounces between 12.5 and 15.5 but when I lay into the accelerator the reading drops to 10. IDK if it's supposed to be like that or what

yea ur sensor is fine if thats what ur asking.. i assume ur N/A with mods and not tuned? thats why ur running really rich when you gun it. usually when ur at crusing speeds ur AFR should bounce around but 12.5 is a little rich but nothing u cant fix with a tune

Yes that's normal, the car is trying its best to stay @ 14.7 so it tends to bounce rich-lean while cruising
