factory shift knob removal

Trying to put in a TWM. The guide says put two screw drivers under the knob, between the knob and the reverse lockout ring, and pry the knob up. The reverse lockout ring promptly exploded into 6 pieces. I can't find anything to pry against now and get leverage. Anyone else experience this? Why does the knob have to come off? Just for the shift boot?

I ended up hitting on the sides of the shift knob with a hammer a little, then it lifted right off.
