Fuel Cap and C.E.L

What going on people.
Two quick questions:
1. Is it true that if your gas cap is loose for a given period of time (like a few days), your check engine light will come on? The reason that I'm asking is that my dummy light came on today and one of my friends at work told me that this might be the problem. So I check and my gas cap wasn't on right.
2. If this is what caused the problem, how the hell can get rid of the CEL? Can I just disconnect the battery for like ten minutes and if its another problem causing it the light will come back on?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, leaving the cap off will set off the CEL. There's a pump for the evap system that pressurizes the tank, and if it can't hold the pressure it figures there's a leak somewhere. Either leaking gas (bad for you), or leaking evaporated gas into the air (bad for the EPA).

Yeah, that is what causes it. Tighten the cap, give it a day or so, it will go away. Or, you can reset the light by taking off a battery cable, but that is unnecessary. Just ignore it for a little while, the next time the car tests the evap system it will kill the light.
