Fuel leak

Hi everyone,

I am new to the site, woot! Bought my car about 4 months ago from a kid in town. Got a smokin deal on it so I couldnt resist. So far, the car has been fine and ran in good condition. It had about 50k miles when I purchased it, it now has about 58.5k miles now. Yeah, I drive a lot for my job.

Anyways, the problem is that about 2 weeks ago I went to Brake Masters to get my oil changed. Since they were busy at the time, and my friend lives right down the street, I agreed to leave my car with them and they agreed to phone me when my oil change was complete.

Two hours later, my friend dropped me off in the parking lot. I surveyed the lot and noticed my car parked in the exact same spot I left it. Curious as to why my car wasnt serviced yet, I walked in the store and spoke with the man who told me he would call. He told me he wasnt able to get it in yet because they were so busy. Its whatever. I asked for my keys because I had to go to work within the hour. One of the techs approached me and told me that he could change my oil in 20 mins and would do it with 75% off for the wait. I agreed to let him change it. What a mistake...

Two to three days after the change, a friend who was riding in my car mentioned that he smelt gas. We were in heavy traffic and I figured it was one of the 18 wheelers near us. Everyday after that I was smelling gas. It wasnt until yesterday when I pulled out of my drive way and noticed a small spot where gas was literally leaking onto the pavement.

Today while I was filling up, I noticed an EXTREME smell of gas. As the gas pump was pumping into my tank, I got onto my knees and realized that there was a lot of gas leaking onto the pavement. A 1/4 tank got me about 40 miles today. I had some free time and took my car back to Brake Masters this morning. They quoted me $178 to see what the problem is!! I explained that I didnt have the money for that at this time and he offered to lower the price to $110! Now that my trust is completely shot with them, I leave and drive to Goodyear where one of my buddies works. He is ASE certified and knows his ****.

Once we got the car on the lift we immediately realized that the leak was coming from the top of the fuel tank. My friend had a puzzled, "how did this happen?" kinda face. I told him that I havent done anything to car other than having the oil changed a few weeks prior. He was asking me questions about the lift that they used. I distinctly remember them using a lift where you drove over the top, and a single pole come out of the ground directly in the middle of the ground.

My friend explained that the only way it could be leaking from the top is if the lift wasnt properly positioned and it put pressure on the gas tank and messed with the lines on the hat. Can you guys think of any other way this could have happened? It sucks, my car is just leaking fuel. I can watch my gauge go down as I drive. I am really mad and want to approach the manager at Brake Masters, but I dont want to come off as an *******. The problem will be fixed luckily, but what would you guys do in this situation.

Oh and for all the AZ members, mainly Tucson, DO NOT GO TO BRAKE MASTERS ON BROADWAY BLVD AND CAMPBELL AVE!

Moral of the story is change your own oil...

It's going to be super hard to get the oil change place to fess up about doing any damage to the car, or even proving anything they did caused said damage. If the car is under warranty at all, take it to a dealer and play dumb.

Dropping the tank isn't too much of a PITA... So I'd start there and see if the line can't be repaired. Quiksteel makes a plastic putty as does JB Weld that should be impervious to gas and oil. You could probably ghetto mod it with putty to seal the leak...

If you want to fix it for real, the job itself isn't very hard to replace the in-tank canister, however the parts aren't the cheapest since you have to buy the hard lines (that are broken), canister, regulator, pump, fuel level sensor float, etc all as one fuel sender canister unit. It's all one part number around $250 I think.

If your car is an 05' with a crappy pump you could also upgrade to a Walbro pump. It would also be easy to disable the in-tank regulator to do a BRFPS or return style system. All depends on what you want to do with the car.

My sense would tell me that if it is leaking, that the fuel is not holding a proper fuel pressure since there is a crack in the line(s). I wouldn't go ragging on the car too bad for fear that the pressure might drop enough to cause a lean condition, and kaboom.

#09226A: Product Safety - Fuel Odor or Spotting on Ground - Replace Fuel Pump Module - (Mar 2, 2010)

Subject: 09226A - Fuel Odor or Spotting on Ground - Replace Fuel Pump Module

Models: 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

2006 Pontiac Pursuit

2006 Saturn ION

Originally Sold or Currently Registered in Arizona, Nevada

2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

2007 Pontiac G5

2007 Saturn ION

Originally Sold or Currently Registered in Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, Texas

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This bulletin is being revised to include additional population. Please discard all copies of bulletin 09226, issued January 2010.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Condition
General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2006 model year Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac Pursuit, and Saturn ION vehicles originally sold or currently registered in Arizona and Nevada; and 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, Saturn ION vehicles originally sold or currently registered in Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, and Texas. Some of these vehicles have a condition in which the plastic supply or return port on the modular reservoir assembly (MRA) may crack. If either of these ports develop a crack, fuel will leak from the area. The customer may notice a fuel odor while the vehicle is being driven or after it is parked. If the crack becomes large enough, fuel may be observed dripping onto the ground and vehicle performance may be affected. If a sufficient amount of fuel were to leak out and if an ignition source were present, a vehicle fire could occur.

Correction
Dealers/retailers are to inspect and, if necessary, replace the fuel pump module.

Vehicles Involved
Involved are certain 2006 model year Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac Pursuit, and Saturn ION vehicles originally sold or currently registered in Arizona and Nevada; and 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, Saturn ION vehicles originally sold, or currently registered, in Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, and Texas, and built within these VIN breakpoints:

Important: Dealers/retailers are to confirm vehicle eligibility prior to beginning repairs by using GMVIS (dealers using WINS) or the Investigate Vehicle History link (dealers/retailers using GWM). Not all vehicles within the above breakpoints may be involved.

For dealers/retailers with involved vehicles, a listing with involved vehicles containing the complete vehicle identification number, customer name, and address information has been prepared and will be provided to dealers/retailers through the GM GlobalConnect Recall Reports. Dealers/retailers will not have a report available if they have no involved vehicles currently assigned.

The listing may contain customer names and addresses obtained from Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any purpose other than follow-up necessary to complete this recall is a violation of law in several states/provinces/countries. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this report to the follow-up necessary to complete this recall.

Parts Information
GM Only: Parts required to complete this recall are to be obtained from General Motors Service and Parts Operations (GMSPO). Please refer to your "involved vehicles listing" before ordering parts. Normal orders should be placed on a DRO = Daily Replenishment Order. In an emergency situation, parts should be ordered on a CSO = Customer Special Order.

Saturn Only: A pre-shipment of the required parts to perform this recall has been sent to involved Saturn US retailers from Saturn Service Parts Operations (SSPO).

Customer Reimbursement - For GM Only
All customer requests for reimbursement of previously paid repairs for the recall condition will be handled by the Customer Assistance Center, not by dealers.

A General Motors Customer Reimbursement Procedure and Claim Form is included with the customer letter.

Important: (For GM US Only) Refer to the GM Service Policies and Procedures Manual, section 6.1.12, for specific procedures regarding customer reimbursement and the form.

Customer Reimbursement - For Saturn Only

A Saturn Customer Reimbursement Procedure and Claim Form are included with the customer letter.

Courtesy Transportation
The General Motors Courtesy Transportation program is intended to minimize customer inconvenience when a vehicle requires a repair that is covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranties. The availability of courtesy transportation to customers whose vehicles are within the warranty coverage period and involved in a product program is very important in maintaining customer satisfaction. Dealers are to ensure that these customers understand that shuttle service or some other form of courtesy transportation is available and will be provided at no charge. Dealers should refer to the General Motors Service Policies and Procedures Manual for Courtesy Transportation guidelines.

Customer Notification
General Motors will notify customers of this recall on their vehicle (see copy of customer letter included with this bulletin).

Dealer Recall Responsibility
The US National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act provides that each vehicle that is subject to a recall of this type must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the customer has tendered it for repair. A failure to repair within sixty days after tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time. If the condition is not adequately repaired within a reasonable time, the customer may be entitled to an identical or reasonably equivalent vehicle at no charge or to a refund of the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation. To avoid having to provide these burdensome remedies, every effort must be made to promptly schedule an appointment with each customer and to repair their vehicle as soon as possible. In the recall notification letters, customers are told how to contact the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration if the recall is not completed within a reasonable time.

All unsold new vehicles in dealers' possession and subject to this recall must be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this recall bulletin before customers take possession of these vehicles.

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this recall at no charge to customers, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Customers who have recently purchased vehicles sold from your vehicle inventory, and for which there is no customer information indicated on the dealer listing, are to be contacted by the dealer. Arrangements are to be made to make the required correction according to the instructions contained in this bulletin. A copy of the customer letter is provided in this bulletin for your use in contacting customers. Recall follow-up cards should not be used for this purpose, since the customer may not as yet have received the notification letter.

In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this recall enters your vehicle inventory, or is in your dealership for service in the future, you must take the steps necessary to be sure the recall correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

February 2010
Dear General Motors Customer:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

General Motors has decided that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2006 model year Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac Pursuit and Saturn ION vehicles originally sold or currently registered in Arizona and Nevada; and 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, Saturn ION vehicles originally sold or currently registered in Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, and Texas. As a result, GM is conducting a safety recall. We apologize for this inconvenience. However, we are concerned about your safety and continued satisfaction with our products.

Important:

• Your vehicle is involved in safety recall 09226.

• Schedule an appointment with your GM dealer/retailer.

• This service will be performed for you at no charge.

Why is your vehicle being recalled?

Your vehicle may have a condition in which the plastic supply or return port on the modular reservoir assembly (MRA) may crack. If either of these ports develop a crack, fuel will leak from the area. You may notice a fuel odor while the vehicle is being driven or after it is parked. If the crack becomes large enough, fuel may be observed dripping onto the ground and vehicle performance may be affected. If a sufficient amount of fuel were to leak out and if an ignition source were present, a vehicle fire could occur.

What will we do?

Your GM dealer/retailer will inspect and, if necessary, replace the fuel pump module. This service will be performed for you at no charge . Because of service scheduling requirements, it is likely that your dealer/retailer will need your vehicle longer than the actual inspection time of approximately 15 minutes. If the fuel pump module requires replacement, an additional 1˝ hours will be needed.

If your vehicle is within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, your dealer/retailer may provide you with shuttle service or some other form of courtesy transportation while your vehicle is at the dealership/facility for this repair. Please refer to your Owner’s Manual and your dealer/retailer for details on courtesy transportation.

What should you do?

You should contact your GM dealer/retailer to arrange a service appointment as soon as possible.

Did you already pay for this repair?

The enclosed form explains what reimbursement is available and how to request reimbursement if you have paid for repairs for the recall condition. Even though you may have already had this condition corrected, you will still need to take your vehicle to your dealer/retailer for additional repairs.

Do you have questions?

If you have questions or concerns that your dealer/retailer is unable to resolve, please contact the Customer Assistance Center. More information about your vehicle can be found at the Owner Center at GM Owners Center - GM.

If after contacting your dealer/retailer and the Customer Assistance Center, you are still not satisfied we have done our best to remedy this condition without charge and within a reasonable time, you may wish to write the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE, Washington DC 20590, or call the toll-free Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1.888.327.4236 (TTY 1.800.424.9153), or go to Safercar.gov.

Federal regulation requires that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice must forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within ten days.

Director,

Customer and Relationship Services

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

Customer Reimbursement - For GM Only
All customer requests for reimbursement for previous repairs for the special coverage condition will be handled by the Customer Assistance Center, not by dealers.

A General Motors Customer Reimbursement Procedure and Claim Form is included with the customer letter.

Important: Refer to the GM Service Policies and Procedures Manual, section 6.1.12, for specific procedures regarding customer reimbursement and the form.

Customer Reimbursement - For Saturn Only
All customer requests for reimbursement for previous repairs for this condition are handled by submitting a reimbursement claim form directly to Saturn retailers for processing; however, if customers choose, they may file a claim through the Saturn Customer Assistance Center.

A Saturn Customer Reimbursement Procedure and Claim Form is included with the customer letter.

February 2010
Dear General Motors Customer:

As the owner of a 2006 model year Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G4, or Saturn ION vehicle or 2007 model year Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, or Saturn ION vehicle, your satisfaction with our product is very important to us.

This letter is intended to make you aware that some 2006 model year Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G4, and Saturn ION vehicles, and some 2007 model year Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Saturn ION vehicles, operated in areas with warm weather, may have a condition in which the plastic supply or return port on the modular reservoir assembly (MRA) may crack. If either of these ports develop a crack, fuel will leak from the area. You may notice a fuel odor while the vehicle is being driven or after it is parked. If the crack becomes large enough, fuel may be observed dripping onto the ground and vehicle performance may be affected.

Do not take your vehicle to your GM dealer/retailer as a result of this letter unless you believe that your vehicle has the condition as described above.

What We Have Done: General Motors is providing owners with additional protection for the fuel pump module. If this condition occurs on your 2006 model year Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G4, or Saturn ION vehicle or 2007 model year Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, or Saturn ION vehicle within 10 years of the date your vehicle was originally placed in service or 120,000 miles (193,000 km), whichever occurs first, the condition will be repaired for you at no charge . Diagnosis or repair for conditions other than the condition described above is not covered under this special coverage program.

What You Should Do: Repairs and adjustments qualifying under this special coverage must be performed by a General Motors dealer or Saturn retailer. You may want to contact your dealer or retailer to find out how long they will need to have your vehicle so that you may schedule the appointment at a time that is convenient for you. This will also allow your dealer or retailer to order parts if they are not already in stock. Keep this letter with your other important glove box literature for future reference.

Reimbursement: The enclosed form explains what reimbursement is available and how to request reimbursement if you have paid for repairs for the special coverage condition. Your request for reimbursement, including the information and documents mentioned on the enclosed form, must be received by GM by February 28, 2011.

If you have any questions or need any assistance to better understand related repairs, please contact your Dealer/Retailer. If you have questions related to a potential reimbursement, please contact the appropriate Customer Assistance Center at the number listed below.

Thx for all the help and advice guys.

I got my car back today and to my surprise it was what you all had suspected. I wish I would have new about the recall BEFORE I spent $232 on the new piece. Lucky I have the receipt from my dealers parts dept as well as the broken piece.

Special thanks to Malaclypse for making me aware that there was a factory recall before I went in to Brake Masters and tried to put the blame on them.

Oh yeah, also the car seems to be running 50x better. I feel like I have more power and get up at lights. And believe it or not, my average MPG went up about 4-5 miles haha. Who woulda thought?

Thanks again for the help guys.
