Fuel leak
i have the same promblem.gas is leacking from the top but its not leaking to the point were it hits the ground.the gas is all over the heat sheild that covers the tank tho I think it might be the fuel pump...
I have this same problem but I have 149,000 on my car. They are offering me a partial program for $200 which is a little steep seeing how they know their is an issue with the part. I called GM to try to get them to help out so I guess I will find out what the district manager decides next week.
I think I have the same problem.. Just went under there and it looks like I'm due to get this recall fixed.. Only question is.... As I was checking it out I was yanking on the hose that was leaking.. And it just broke right off.. Is this cause for the dealer to not honor the recall..? Will they say 'you broke it its no longer under recall rules'..?
Have had several cobalts come in with this problem. The fuel is coming from a plastic line on top of the fuel pump assembley. In order to fix the problem you have to replace the whole fuel pump because the hose is not replaceable. I believe there is a recall on it but the 2 cobalts I had to do it with were out of warranty. Not a hard job but make sure you get the fuel pump with the sending unit because swapping it over is a bitch.

This will be the first time you will have this work performed on your vehicle, correct?
If you would like for me to ensure you are included in the recall, please send me a private message with your name and the last 8 digits of your VIN and I would be happy to look into that.

Hi everyone,
I am new to the site, woot! Bought my car about 4 months ago from a kid in town. Got a smokin deal on it so I couldnt resist. So far, the car has been fine and ran in good condition. It had about 50k miles when I purchased it, it now has about 58.5k miles now. Yeah, I drive a lot for my job.
Anyways, the problem is that about 2 weeks ago I went to Brake Masters to get my oil changed. Since they were busy at the time, and my friend lives right down the street, I agreed to leave my car with them and they agreed to phone me when my oil change was complete.
Two hours later, my friend dropped me off in the parking lot. I surveyed the lot and noticed my car parked in the exact same spot I left it. Curious as to why my car wasnt serviced yet, I walked in the store and spoke with the man who told me he would call. He told me he wasnt able to get it in yet because they were so busy. Its whatever. I asked for my keys because I had to go to work within the hour. One of the techs approached me and told me that he could change my oil in 20 mins and would do it with 75% off for the wait. I agreed to let him change it. What a mistake...
Two to three days after the change, a friend who was riding in my car mentioned that he smelt gas. We were in heavy traffic and I figured it was one of the 18 wheelers near us. Everyday after that I was smelling gas. It wasnt until yesterday when I pulled out of my drive way and noticed a small spot where gas was literally leaking onto the pavement.
Today while I was filling up, I noticed an EXTREME smell of gas. As the gas pump was pumping into my tank, I got onto my knees and realized that there was a lot of gas leaking onto the pavement. A 1/4 tank got me about 40 miles today. I had some free time and took my car back to Brake Masters this morning. They quoted me $178 to see what the problem is!! I explained that I didnt have the money for that at this time and he offered to lower the price to $110! Now that my trust is completely shot with them, I leave and drive to Goodyear where one of my buddies works. He is ASE certified and knows his ****.
Once we got the car on the lift we immediately realized that the leak was coming from the top of the fuel tank. My friend had a puzzled, "how did this happen?" kinda face. I told him that I havent done anything to car other than having the oil changed a few weeks prior. He was asking me questions about the lift that they used. I distinctly remember them using a lift where you drove over the top, and a single pole come out of the ground directly in the middle of the ground.
My friend explained that the only way it could be leaking from the top is if the lift wasnt properly positioned and it put pressure on the gas tank and messed with the lines on the hat. Can you guys think of any other way this could have happened? It sucks, my car is just leaking fuel. I can watch my gauge go down as I drive. I am really mad and want to approach the manager at Brake Masters, but I dont want to come off as an *******. The problem will be fixed luckily, but what would you guys do in this situation.
Oh and for all the AZ members, mainly Tucson, DO NOT GO TO BRAKE MASTERS ON BROADWAY BLVD AND CAMPBELL AVE!

I believe this is completly unrealted to your oil change incident. Take it to a dealership. There was a "recall" on the fuel pump modual that in warmer climates on some years (Depending on where your cars registered) can crack and cause a leak. I had this happen to my car (though the leak wasnt nearly as bad, I only smelt gas if i parked in the garage) GM sent out letters about this saying only bring your car in if you have the problem. They had me fixed in like an hour and a half for $0.00 Even if your not in one of the states covered by this "recall" It's still possible it could be the problem. Just saw your in AZ: So yes, you're probably covered in that state for this.
sweet its basically what was put out in the first page of the thread.. it worked for my car and dealership is gonna cover it with no charge. and im at 78K on my 06 balt.
Thanks for the thread guys.. you save me some money!
btw i live in texas an bought it in t.. but idk its origin... heres my vin incase ne wants to find out its state of origin..
VIN: 1G1AP14P667714785
the dealer verified the VIN by the last 8.. i thought the state of Origin was located in the beginning part of the VIN.. hmm.. idk though.. just a thought.
