Gas Guage Issues...!

Just Wondering if anyone could help me? Ive noticed on my cobalt SS S/C that my gas guage is acting funny... if i have a full tank of gas or whatever ill shut my car off, go to start it again and the gas reading will change to alot lower than i actually have (sometimes reading empty) shut it off start it back up again and its back to normal, it does this atleast once a day where it gives me a false reading, and after i restart it it goes back to being fine... Any ideas? Sending unit? electronics? anyone else have this issue (maybe a TSB for it) let me know what you think....?

Thanks

Keith

mine sometimes stays full longer than normal or drops quicker than normal but by 3/4's of a tank it balances itself out.

My guess is a sensor, because the gas is (at least it was on my old car) measured by a float in the tank. That float shouldn't be getting stuck anywhere, as it's not like it sinks when the is off or anything.

As for the longer than normal full reading, if you top off your tank, or fill more than normal depending on the pump you're at, I would attribute that to the fuel level going higher than the float can go, and taking a bit of driving to get it back down to a measurable level. That's complete guesswork, though, so don't hold me to it.

Mine has been doing the same thing when it is low.
I have noticed if you turn it off and restart it, it seems to go back up where it should be...no idea whats up with it...don't care for it tho.

Sounds like the fuel level sensor, I replaced one on a 500km Pontiac Pursuit a couple weeks ago.

My wife has had the same problem with her ION sedan. Dealership said it was the computer at fault and reflashed it. Even after that she still occasionally has it happen.

Time for Cirrus to go see the dealer for this problem, as well... and the sunroof button, and the passenger side trim...
