General Maintenance

I have a 2007 LS 5 speed with 48,000 miles and figured it might be time to do some maintenance outside of the normal oil/filter changes and air filter changes.

I was thinking at least the fuel filter. Is this hard?

What else should I think about doing to the car with 48,000 on it? Any suggestions would be great.

fuel filter is simple, just get a quick disconnect tool (a few dollars at the auto parts store, i got a whole set for about 8-9 dollars). all you have to do to change the fuel filter is de-pressurize the system (pull one fuse, start the car, wait for the car to die. that's it.) and then swap out the filter. the filter is held on by a bolt back by the gas tank. once you take the bolt off, you use the quick disconnect to take it off the fuel lines. some leaking is normal, because there will still be some gas in the filter and in the lines. so have a bucket handy take the old filter off, put the new filter on, put the fuse back, and put the key to the on position. the car will re-pressurize. start the car, and that's it. may take a few secs for it to start. the biggest tip is to REALLY remember where the fuse came out of. there's a few empty spots and it's very easy to put it in the wrong one.

as far as other maintenance, i would check all your fluids, hoses, clamps, filters, etc. probably a good idea to change your coolant and brake fluid if you never have. maybe the tranny fluid too. all easy stuff if you can turn a wrench to the left and to the right.

be careful with the filter.... I depressureized my system in that same manner of pulling the fuel pump fuse and letting the car die... I even cranked it a couple of times dry to make sure there wasnt any pressure......... my car still pissed fuel with the torrent of a river

I called the chevy dealer today and they wanted $75 for a fuel filter. Is this the average price of a fuel filter for a Cobalt?

search the net.

I say check and maybe change all fluids. check the brake pads. use fuel cleaner to clean out that tank.

don't ever, ever buy from the dealer unless you want to get ripped off HARD. that is certainly not the average price.

gmpartsdirect has them for 35 dollars.

dealers are always expensive. the only time u go to the deal is for maintenance under your warranty. People dont understand that they rip the **** out of people. i mean come on 60 bucks to rotate tires. you can do most of these things yourself.
