grinding noise on turn???

When I accelerate through a turn (usually a left turn) i hear a grinding sound...like an ice machine...almost sounds like my flexpipe is separating cuz the sound sort of sounds like raw exhaust. I'm really not sure...any help? I have the 3" ZZP DP

Before that, check your dampener...if it's not adjusted just right, you'll hear noise when you turn left. Many other people have had the same problem...

I get a grinding noise when I turn right and accelerate. Turns out its a front rack problem, and there is a new one on the way from gm. Probably will get a letter in the mail from gm about it.

I just bought a '07 Cobalt SS. Took possession of it yesterday, and I have the same damn issue.

I noticed it in a hard right - 90deg - turn at-speed, and went to a empty parking lot last night. While doing figure eights at idle or coast it's barely noticeable. The grind is harder in a right turn, but also makes the noise when doing a 90deg or 180 deg left turn, and is even worse when accelerating in said turns. I'm a little concerned about what's rubbing together under there...

Elvis, how did the service department treat you on this issue? As if it's a known issue or did they give you a hard time?

Canada Take a look at the ground effect on the passanger side

Mine made the same noise and I could see the visable rub mark on the fender liner and attachment flap for the ground effect, because it is sticking out further because it is not 90 deg like the driver side.

I here a "rubbing" noise on sharp turns also but have looked at it on the lift several times and can not find any rub marks.

I was treated well, the odometer doesnt lie. I had 134km on it when I brought it in and I also recreated it with the service foreman in the car. There is a TSB on it, and a new rack is apparently on the way. He was saying the rack assembly on these guys is from a malibu ? That wouldnt surprise me, not that its a bad thing.

I would say bring it in, have it documented and you will probably get a letter about it.

If anyone wants to nip this in the bud, tell the service dept to search for a TSB regarding a "Clunk".

When the drivetrain is under torque due to accelleration, the steering arm is actually contacting a corner of the transmission or a transmission mount. I forget which, I overheard the conversation and wasn't told directly what the issue was.

This is a known issue, and GM is working on a fix. The soft fix is to adjust the steering to lessen the likelihood of the arm contacting the trans/mount. They 'are working on it' and should have a hard fix of some sort and will include a recall.

However, just because they adjust the steering to 'lessen' the likelihood of the arm contacting, I was still able to reproduce the 'grind' or 'clunk' post-fix, although not as dramatically.

Rarrgh. I'm still within my 30 days of initial purchase period. If this car doesn't feel like it's worth $23K to me by the time day 27 rolls around, I have no qualms about returning it.

Dude, that's what I like to call "Bull ****". As in 'them' bullshitting 'you'.

Straight from the Service Invoice:

Called Tech(nical Support Center), R&R Reposition Steering Rack, Set Front Tow (sic), Trans Mount Rubbing On Steering Shaft

The kicker is that the 'grinding' noise has only been arrested a bit. It is now a clunking noise akin to the "HHR Clunk" I'm going to drive to a couple of local dealers on Tuesday to see if any AREN'T slacktastic bastidges. If they win me over, they're going to be installing a few things.
