help! noise from rotor

the back right wheel is making a rubbing sound almost like the pads are shot or something but they have plenty of life left. i noticed this the other day and today while out and about with some buddys it got worse.. its not constant but pretty close and when you brake you hear it a little louder, all in all its not too loud and obnoxious but its there.. and is annoying. a friend said that it could be a stone or somthing stuck in there bc he said he has seen it a lot in autox. almost sounds like metal to metal. any info guys? this is realy bothering me..

i say either 1.) my e brake is sticking which my buddys dont think is the prob. 2.) there is somthing stuck somewhere making the rubbing 3.) the brake is stuck? not releasing all the way?? idk.. would like to hear your guys input. this sucks bc just the other day i f'd up my antenna when trying to put the shorty on so i gotta get that fixed at the dealer. now this prob

thanks

ehh.. it could be. but he says he notices it more when braking. the way to test a wheel bearing would be to get up to.. idk. 30 mph and coast with the clutch in so you can hear the car and then swerve back and fourth. if the noise in cutting in and out then it may be a wheel bearing. if its still consistant i would rule the wheel bearing out.

idk man. wheel bearings usually only go bad if the wheel bearing was installed wrong and not tourqued correct and blah blah or just reallyyy old age on a car. ur car is 2 years old. almost brand new. unless there is a defect outta the factory i dont see it being that. not to rule it out but im just saying. do that little diagnosis trick i just stated and let us all know. ill ask one of the guys at work who owns a tc cobalt. he may know something about that,

The inside surface of rotor might be toast.

hey i did the test today and i think it is the bearing. everytime i would jerk the wheel to the left i would hear the scraping noise... idk why my wheel bearing would go at 18,000 miles if it is the prob

well ya. thats a little strange to me. but i dont knnow much about the tc brake problems. somebody up a couple posts just said change the pads and rotors and ur good. that might be the problem not the wheel bearing. as im sure uve noticed before, if uve ever had bad brakes they make a scraping noise all the time aswell. usually its cause by VERY LOW brakes but those brakes may have some sort of issue with them where they do that anyway ha. ive never heard it but that may be the problem that these brakes have and thats why everybody is pissed that gm hasnt warrantied the rear brakes..

I have a 09 turbo. When I bought it, it had 3000 miles on the odometer. I noticed that the parking brake was not releasing properly and that there were grooves in the rotors (both sides) I removed the slider pins that locate the brake pads (there are two per side). I then lubricated the slider pins and also the area where the pads contact the caliper with brake grease and reassembled. The parking brake now releases properly and the grooves on the brake rotors are wearing down smooth. I did not replace the pads or rotors. The rotors almost look like normal wearing rotors.
There's about 7000 miles on the car now and I'm happy with the repair/fix.

Just hope you don't have to replace them at 15-20K miles. It's the pads that are the problem and you will prolly start to see the problem again in 5 K miles. The pad material contaminates the pins and screws up the rotors. Keep us posted.

I was going to replace the rear rotors and pads and actually bought all the pieces. I even bought a caliper piston pusher. But, with the way the brakes are wearing, I'm going to hold off replacing those parts.

I'll keep my eye on the rotors and give an update sometime in the future.

The local Chevrolet dealer just replaced the rear rotors and pads. When the pads were removed, there were particles of rotor material imbedded in the pads. That imbedded
rotor material acted like a cutting tool and made fairly deep grooves on the inside
surface of the rotor (both rotors). The car is a 2009 SS with 12,000 miles on the odometer.

my best advice (havent read the thread just the OP)

take off ur wheel and dissassemble the brake assembly. make sure everything is where it needs to be, like for instance, you caliper retaining bolt may be missing and that is causing the noise you are hearing.
