not trusting ebrake aside, i gotta say the ebrake on the cobalt is super weak. you can basically drive around with it fully engaged without a problem!

agreed...definatly sucks for burnouts. it doesnt even drag the wheels while locked...they just roll.

and holy hell you let the car get to 300 degrees!?....i hope you didnt run it that long like that or be prepared for more problems now than just cosmetic..

First gear is only your friend when parking. Not when your spinning not going anywhere. Anyways, sorry to hear that. I hope it all works out for you. If you have full coverage which I assume you do on a new car you should be fine. Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

Edit Post: When I park, I always use 1rst, or revs. I always pull the E-Brake all the way up.

i didnt run it like that i tried to keep it off for a while and let the car roll, i would let the light come on and then turn off the car and let it go and when it came down, i would start the car usually while it was still moving, so i hope no motor damage

well, it doesn't need to run very long to cause damage.....sorry to say, but I'm pretty sure there's going to definetily be some damage to the head and maybe other parts.

hey guys isnt the e-brake actually called the parking brake?

meaning you should pull it when you park?

i always pull mine, and only put it in gear when i am on a steep incline/decline

i found more damage, the headlight mounts are broke, and the when the guy hooked the chain to the whole in the frame it ripped it back about an inch, so i dont know what they are gonna do with that, would that damage be a total loss, or can they fix it

According to the Manual for the SS/SC provided by GM you should put it in reverse when parking and pull the E brake.

Third definitely not, first or reverse are your best bet there isn't as much resistance in third as there is in first or reverse.

As well, it doesn't matter which gear you put it in based on whether you're on a hill or not because your tranny can still spin backwards when the vehicle is off if you're in first . I do the same as you thought mainly because I'd tend to rather have my car shoot up a hill if I pull a stupid and let my foot off the clutch when I start it and leave it in gear...not gonna jump as far uphill as it would back down .

Well man, it cost about $3,00 through progressive for a new hood, bumper, headlight assembly, plus paint, labor, and straightening out the front end. Luckily it didnt come out of my pocket...

Good luck getting it fixed...

later

P.S. I like to park my car in 5th gear with out the ebrake... works great....

HA... yea right....

E-Brake should only be used in stopping emergencies. Never when parking a car. Parking a car with the e-brake only cannot and will not help period. Leaving it in gear is the best solution.. preferribly (sp?) in reverse.

THIS IS STUPIDEST THING I HAVE READ IN A LONG TIME
Although i agree that the safest thing to do is put it in gear when parking whoever thinks an "E-BRAKE" is put on your car and designed for emergancys only dosn't know crap about mechanics they are not called an e-brake it is called a parking brake and is to be used as such check your mannual and in some places like canada if not used the cop can give you a 45 dolar ticket (only happend to my lippy friend that i know of) but can still happen

that first part is a Quote but no idea how to post it like that

You know whats funny is that I have parked my car on some crazy hills and the E-brake has held ever time with out fail.

I think that some of you are not pulling it hard enuff or that your brakes need to be adjusted properly.

I have been driving for 10 years and drive a semi for a living (It uses only the parking brakes to stay parked at ALL TIMES) and I have never had a car roll away with the E-brake set. EVER!

I think there is ether somehting wrong with the car or the drive is not pulling the e-brake hard enuff. I know that my wife cant release the e-brake when I set it and if she sets it I have to pull it agen and will get 2-3 more clicks out of it. That may be all that it takes for the car to roll. Im not sure but its posable.
