How much is too much?

hey guys im not very mechanically inclined so please dont hate on the thread but I rescently got my oil changed at 3200 miles so hopefully the extra 200 miles doesnt hurt it. When I went to pick up the oil I noticed in the manual it didnt tell me how many qts to use so I asked the guy at advanced auto and on his computer it showed up as 6 qts. so I went and got 6 qts of mobil 1 5w-30 full synthetic with the extended performance and a fram oil filter. After I got the oil changed I noticed white smoke but didnt pay too much attention to it since its been pretty cold down here. I got back online and found out everyones been putting in 5 qts. and im a little concerned since I dont wanna drown my car with oil so im wondering if I need to drain it a little and then add/remove more oil till the dipstick says full? or keep driving till my next oil change? ive been driving the car with the new oil for about 1300 miles now.

A quart is too much, you risk blowing seals and gaskets. Your going to have to try and drain that qt back out.
And I wont lecture you, but it says right in your owners manual that it takes 5 quarts (assuming we are talking about an SS/TC, not sure what the others take)

X2.........you know how to change your oil but you don't know how much to put in?.......start with 4.5qts and work your way up by looking at the dipstick....

I didnt change my oil myself my friend helped me with it. The old guy at the advanced auto said 6 qts on the computer so I assumed he knew what he was talking about. I didnt see in the tc manual where it said 5 quarts even a couple of my friends couldnt find it either. You said it may be too late, when will I know its too late? Its been running smooth even after 1300 miles, I dont get on it that much either. Either way its being drained a little before I use it again.

the T/C is around 4.8 qts and the S/c is 6.3 ?? correct me if im wrong. I know its a big difference from the S/c to the T/C, I have know idea why... but it is. Either way you gotta get that drained down or yur gonna have some major problems and warranty won't cover it if it screws somethin up!

mine has never seen below 60%, everyones different I like to keep fresh clean oil in there, dirty oil just causes premature wear. Oils cheap engines are not.

Wink

Check your oil level on the dipstick
if its just SLIGHTLY over full, the extra will probably blow out the vent / crankcase breather
(wich leads to your intake for some reason) then, get burnt out the exhaust.
If its WAY overfull then ya drain some out.

  1. Synthetic Oils can go longer between changes then convention. The extra 200 miles will not hurt you
  2. The smoke from the engine, is most likely spilled oil burning off, happens to me if im not careful putting it in
  3. The owners manual on my car says 6 quarts. I put in 6 quarts and im at the full marker.

The 2.2L is easy, 5 quarts and you're good to go.

Yeah, the 2.2/2.4 basically just requires one of those 5qt jugs.

the smoke wasnt coming from the engine though we used a funnel to keep a nasty spill from happening the smoke was coming from the exhaust but like I said its been pretty cold so I didnt pay too much attention to it. I havent had any problems so far thank god but its been drained a little bit to where the level needs to be and the car is still running good. if it was over oiled like that what could have happened? the cobalt isnt my daily driver by the way.

if you put to much oil in a car, it runs higher oil pressure, it would cause gasket failure, internal and external. maybe not right away, but if done consistantly and over time, it would definately leak oil
