How to wash out the engine 07 cobalt ls

I have been wondering for a while. Do i just take a hose to the engine and soak and scrub or is there some special procedure?

From what I heard, cover the alternator and stay away from wires and the coils.

Soak with a gentle degreaser and powerwash.

I use engine decreased and a rag. My engine isn't dressed up yet though, so it never really looks super clean.
