Igniton Lock Cylinder problem
Igniton Lock Cylinder problem
just got a letter yesterday regarding a binding condtion in the ignition lock cylinder housing! im glad i offically got this letter. Problem i was having was it would be hard to turn the actual key over to start the car. so last year i switched from the key i was using for 2 years since the car left the dealer to the spare key they gave me. and it went away but started happening again recently one year later.. i thought it was just the key because when i switched to the spare starting the car was different and i had NO problems.
so i got a letter that says that a condition occures in some 08 cobalts and a binding condition may accure between the ignition lock cylinder and the housing. causing it to be difficult to turn the key and/or remove it from the ignition and if the vehicle is running it may be difficult to turn the car off.
i have no problems turning the car off just gotta fiddle it around when turning it on and its really anoying. one of my friends just 2 weeks ago was like bro wtf how do you start your car. Me being use to this condition and driving the car everyday not thinking it was a known problem to GM I was like just gotta fiddle with the key idk why it does this its anoying. But im glad it is finally a GM known problem and there is a fix to it. I guess it is not a recall just a problem that can occurs.
unsure if its other year cobalts, but on my letter says some 2008 so i just wanted to post this.

ill post a video

Like you said, we've known about this for awhile and have been telling GM. They just finally decided to do something.
Not sure why you're saying it's not a recall though. I don't remember if the letter I received actually called it a "recall" or not I guess. I never had a problem with my car but they still replaced the cylinder at no cost when I took my car in for an oil change. I do remember that the letter said that if I had replaced the cylinder earlier that I would be reimbursed for the work. That might not be a recall but it sure sounds like one. But then again, my car is still under warranty and maybe yours isn't? I'd definitely contact your local dealership if you're having problems of any kind with it.

yeah the letter doesnt say recall on it. says in bold letters DO NOT TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO YOUR CHEVROLET DEALER AS A RESULT OF THIS LETTER ULESS YOU BELIEVE THAT YOUR VEHICLE HAS THE CONDITION AS DESCRIBED ABOVE
and yeah i gotta bring it to the dealer just have to figure out when. i work mon-fri 725-325. and i doubt going to the dealer at 4 oclock when i get my car would work out. i work on saturday too at my part time job but only till 12. but maby i could just get dropped off to work or borrow my parents car and drop the car off at the dealer in the morning. i highly doubt if i was to drop my car off on a mon night for service on tuesday the dealer would give me a rental car. i asked before but i was 20 when i asked. im 21 now so i actually may be able to

Hello all,
I had just wanted to provide some more information on what was recently issued on the ignition lock. A Special Coverage involves extending the warranty coverage of a specific vehicle component or system for an identified non-safety related failure mode. In this case, it is on the ignition lock cylinder. Your vehicle would have to exhibit the condition detailed in the letter in order to be repaired, and it must occur before the expiration of the Special Coverage (looking at this particular bulletin, they've given you 10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever occurs first). This makes it different than a recall, where the targeted component would be replaced or the prescribed service be performed regardless of mileage, time, or presence of a problem.
If anybody would like for me to check and see if this special coverage applies to their vehicle, please send me a private message with the last 8 digits of your VIN.
Kind regards,
Sarah

Yeah I got this letter too. So far I havent had any issues with my ignition lock cylinder, but my car is only 4 years old with only 69k on the odometer. I've kept my notification paper they sent me and if at any time within the 10 year/120K thing I have issues, I'll definitely be taking it in to the dealer. Have had nothing but great experiences with GM, so Im not too worried about it.
yeah i orig thought last year after 3 years if using the same key it was the key. switched to my spare and it went away. but only took a few more months to happen again
tomorrow at 1 is my appt
