LUGS SNAPPED OFF! WTF ADVICE?? pics inside
Ok so i got up this morning to make a quick run to see my girl and not 5 minutes from pulling out of my driveway i was going through a neighborhood and i heard my passenger side wheel making some weird noise.
I get out look it over looks alright, i had just been in to the dealer to fix the bearing and hub on the driver side the week before and now the noise was back only on the other side.. so i decided to ditch the girl visit and immediately head to the dealer right down the street from where i was.
As soon as i started to go and turn back onto the street i hear a clunk clunk and it grinds real bad (im going maybe 15-20mph) all of a sudden my wheel flies off! i see my wheel maybe twenty feet in the air and it lands in someones yard down the street and my car comes to a grinding halt...
WTF
i go to look at where the wheel should be and the lugs arent even there on the hub, i walk down the street and found one with the lug nut still tightly in place. **** just snapped off.
Soooooooo 2 hours later and roadside assistance im at the dealer they look at it, couple of the service dudes are pretty cool and we were looking at this other Balt the a dealer dropped off for some work(makin another thread for that one) but the service rep guy comes up and tells me that the warranty does not apply because a have aftermarket wheels on the car????? WTF MAN
i had just put the wheels on like 4-5 months ago, bought em brand new.. i dont see the correlation between bad hubs and lugs snapping and my aftermarket wheels. not to mention they did warranty hub and bearing work just the week before!
What the hell do i say? such bullshit.. /rant

The wheel landed by the truck and those white pipes there on this one

Check out my scrape marks

Lol at least its lower now

When whoever installed your wheels, did they balance them? And did you get an alignment after you got them? Cuz if you didn't, over the course of 4-5 months with no alignment and off balanced wheels, that **** will start to tear off...
Lol thanks man i put alot of work into it
they balanced them for me when i bought em but i never got them aligned. you think slight misalignment could cause all 4 lugs to snap off like that?
aww man, atleast your car is ok, My tire blew out on the highway on my old car an my whole front end was tore up lol i dont see how the aftermarket wheels would effect it like that, are they lighter than the stock ones? I'd call GM on that one man..
They were put on at the place i bought em with air tools, im sure they were plenty secure..
Almost anything on a car, if not properly adjusted, torqued or too tight or too loose will cause something to fail. I'm gonna use me as an example... I got new tires a long time ago but never got an alignment before or after the installation of the tires, after about 8 or 9 months I take my wheels off to paint them and I look on the inside sidewall and that **** is almost to the wires but the rest of the tires are in really good condition... then I look around the the hubs and the threads are beginning to get a little warped, even some came off from the studs... So after that, anything I do wheel related, like get new wheels or buy new tires, I take the balt to get an alignment, it will save you big bucks in the long run my friend...
are you saying you like it loose??
Thanks and lesson well learned trust me.. im just trying to get it fixed i cant afford repairs right now i leave for basic in two months and im broke as FKUC
I will be doing this tomorrow first thing

As long as a torque stick is used to prevent over torquing of the lugs and then verified with a torque wrench. You're fine. Ruiling an impact out is foolish.
got any enemys? any one you pissed off lately? it wouldnt just fall off three months after a repair. if you havent had them off in weeks im willing to bet someone loosened them on ya.
on a side note, Aftermarket wheels, when new can cause the lugs to loosen after the first 50-100 miles. how long ago did you get the wheels? they will loosen after the initial mounting.

Ya this is definitely the fault of whoever put your wheels on last. Lugs just don't snap off on their own for no good reason.
My guess is that they over tightened the lug nuts to a point where they twisted the bolts. This would make the bolts extremely weak, and it's just a matter of time before they break from the stress of driving.
If the end of the bolts are still stuck in the hubs, post a picture of them where they are broken. You'll be able to see if they are twisted at all. Actually I'm assuming the other ends of the bolts are still bolted to the wheel too, post pics of those as well.

Are the aftermarket wheels you have lug centric and hub centric??
Often people buy aftermarket wheels with multi-fit bolt patterns and don't realize that the wheels are not compatible with the hubs. This happends to VW guys all the time, non hub-centric wheels work the wheel bolts loose and they end up losing the wheels.
There appears to be no problem with the hub on the car. I do not blame the dealer for not covering it, the problem was most definitely caused by your aftermarket wheels or an improper tightening of the wheel lug nuts.

you need to go after what ever ******* put your wheel on crooked, theres a certain pattern to tighten the lugs and if you dont do it you can put the wheel on crooked and that is the result, i know from personal experience, snapped all four lugs like that too only my fender dropped on the wheel and i didnt drag the ground for 3 foot hahaha but seriously they didnt put the wheel on right
